Contracts Set On Lowgap Road
The state highway commission awarded a contract to build 2.12 miles of highway on Lowgap road from near Fred Armfield’s home toward the Virginia line. The route follows the present road through the village and includes grading widening curves and gravel treatment for future oil and stone work. Negro Suspect Arrested On Assault Charge
Tom Madden a 24 year old man was arrested after entering the Wood home on Haymore Street and beating Mr. and Mrs. Wood with an iron poker. Both victims suffered scalp injuries and briefly lost consciousness. Madden was moved to another county to avert possible violence. whether a criminal assault occurred remains under investigation.

School Children Have Good Record In T B Clinics
This week closes the second week of tuberculosis clinics in county schools under the County Health Department with State Sanitarium help and Dr. H L Seay assisting Dr. H J Sykes. Of 1784 tested children age 10 and up in rural schools, 132 had positive reactions about 7.05 percent, well below the state average of 16 percent. Positive cases are advised to have x rays to check for active tuberculosis. about two percent of positives show activity requiring treatment. City schools will begin testing next week, with expected higher positive rates that may raise the county average toward the state level.

Fred Mills of Mount Airy was injured in a Sunday afternoon collision near Hillsville. His skull was fractured and he was hospitalized in Galax, with his car and another badly wrecked. Burton Gallimore of Hillsville drove the other vehicle. Mills faced a serious prognosis but was reported to be improving.
