London reports Allied shipping has entered the Schelde estuary with supplies for Antwerp as triple Allied thrusts press German forces near the inland waterway. Berlin radio says German E boats attacked shipping and destroyed a 2000 ton vessel and a small gunboat.
In Leyte near Carigara Maj. Gen. Verne Mudge's First Cavalry dismounted troops clash with a large Japanese force to control Carigara town. The fighting aims to clear the escape road toward Ormoc as 24th division troops press counterattacks. Meanwhile Tokyo reports say B 29s raided Tokyo in broad daylight amid anti aircraft fire with mixed claims of success.
The Red army pushed within 33 miles of Budapest and seized the railway town of Lajosmitse along with over 100 other settlements in the Danube Tisza plain. Kecakemet, a major railway junction, fell 44 miles southeast as armored spearheads closed on the capital.
The 8 000 county children target enrollment for the Junior Red Cross was set by Mr. Pendergraph. In Mount Airy Juniors collected 50 000 pounds waste paper and 219 000 pounds scrap metal. Over 150 members trained in first aid nursing and nutrition produced about 1 000 items for the armed forces.
Tech Sgt Dennis H. Edwards son of Mr and Mrs Irvin R Edwards of Mount Airy North Carolina served in a 7th AAP bomber. He received the Air Medal Leaf Cluster for aerial bombardment operations against Japan in the Central Pacific. Military unit details are incomplete due to damaged text.
The War Department releases a list of local service members returning from overseas for rest and furlough. Pfc Thomas R. Gurnell reports to Fort Bragg after 24 months in the Southwest Pacific with a parachute infantry unit. Pvt Carl Tilley Jr served 22 months overseas with the Signal Corps in Iceland and reports to Port Bragg. Pfc James E B Hill, son of Mrs Ellis Hill, served 40 months abroad. Sgt Stephen Scott Banner, son of Mr Ed win Banner of Mount Airy, spent 22 months overseas.
Pfc Willie W Jenkins son of Mr and Mrs John Bowman Mount Airy N C is a member of Maj Gen Frank D Merrill s Marauders who earned the Presidential Citation for exploits behind Jap lines in north Burma He took part in the 700 mile trek through Burma jungles culminating in the capture of Myitkyina He previously worked for Coca Cola Bottling Co Mount Airy and after overseas duty in Trinidad joined the Marauders He has served nearly a year in CBI land and is now arriving in Miami Florida from India for furlough and rest
Jaien P. Wrenn Jr of the Air Corps Reserve, now instructing RAF pilots at Terrell Texas under Lend Lease, spent a weekend with his parents in our area. He has about 3600 flying hours and averages 70 to 100 hours monthly, began flying at The Citadel Aero Club, later owned a plane, attended Dallas Aviation College as a 1939 student and instructor, taught advanced aviation for instructors, trained U.S. Army Air Corps instructors, and for 14 months has worked at the No 1 British Flight Training School in Terrell using North American Combat Trainers.
Rural Surry county districts exceed goals while Mount Airy lags behind by about 2500. Suburban schools and rural districts meet targets, but Mount Airy proper misses by around 800 for residents and 1700 for mills and factories. Officials expect reports to close the gap and remind donors that 3000 more must be raised than last year.
Sgt Graham Lawrence attached to the 5th Army in Italy has received his present rating. His wife and small daughter live with her parents in Brunswick Georgia. He is the son of Mr and Mrs H C Lawrence of Dobson.
Sgt James Robertson son of Mr and Mrs D A Robertson announces safe arrival in France. He is now one of two Robertson sons in France with another in the South Pacific area.
Republicans and Democrats hold speakings as Surry County heads toward voting next Tuesday. Democratic Chairman Llewellyn hosts an ole time rally with Gov. Broughton. Republicans meet at Eldora School with Judge Tilley and Lacey Harkrader. Voters face statewide offices and Congress races, with Gov Gregg Cherry and Frank C. Patton leading party tickets. Polls open at sunrise and The News hosts its election party Tuesday night.
The Third Service Command staged a wartime firepower exhibit in a North Carolina high school stadium to promote Army recruitment and labor for Radford Ordnance Works. Soldiers demonstrated a simulated battle with heavy weapons while Pfc James Privette hosted and Carl Baker spoke on job needs. The 73-man show toured Hic kory Statesville Salisbury High Point Beelville and Spray before returning to Virginia.
From Italy Capt. Lewis Webb is on a 30 day furlough with his parents Mr. and Mrs. A. G. Webb in Mount Airy. He spent two years overseas in the air corps first to Palestine then across North Africa chased Rommel before serving in Italy. He entered service October 1940.
Miss Emma Stanford aged 66 died at her Galax Virginia home after a yearlong illness. She had lived in Galax since age five, moving there from Winston Salem with her parents. Funeral services are set for 10 a.m. Friday at First Methodist Church Galax, with Rev. E H Ogie officiating. Burial will be in Salem Cemetery Winston-Salem.
A World War II letter from Pvt Herman Osler Shaw in Germany to Ye Editor expresses gratitude for The Mount Airy News. He notes delays in receiving papers, hopes to reach Berlin, and praises home news while promising hard fighting and loyalty to Uncle Sam.
The Mount Airy tobacco market saw 259 270 pounds sold for 112 014 03 dollars on Wednesday, averaging 43 20 per hundredweight for growers. Through five days pounds sold total 5 294 406 for 2 144 202 21 dollars as dark tobaccos flood the market and congestion eases, with a five day sale schedule set to resume next Monday.

Mrs Celia Jane Utt of Pancy Gap Virginia died Saturday night at Martin Memorial Hospital after weeks of illness. She was a native of Carroll County and Lutheran Church member.
