W M Johnson recounts a Navy press cruise aboard the USS Ticonderoga departing Winston-Salem by air to Norfolk Va He notes the war readiness of the fleet and describes scenes at sea and on board including reflections on reforestation and hardwood preservation.
A Texas truck driver Arnold Lee Faulk enberry aged 20 died when his tractor trailer ran off Fancy Gap Mountain around 9 p.m. Sunday. Witnesses said brakes failed near the top and the vehicle slid down the mountain before stopping. A passenger was injured but expected to recover.
Dennis Smith, a prisoner at the Mount Airy jail, fell unconscious around 4:45 a.m. Sunday, hitting his head. Set E. V. Marion responded during an attempted cell release by John McHone, and Smith was taken to Elkin hospital for stitches before being moved to Dobson county jail.

Mount Airy resident Robert E. Johnson 28 faces larceny charges after a car stolen from Rockford Street Saturday night was recovered Sunday by Deputy Sheriff Bill Lowe. A gas station attendant identified Johnson as the driver, noting he had stopped there earlier.
Army Pvt. Keith L. Laney 21 son of Mrs Verna Laney Mount Airy recently took part in a field training exercise with the 4th Infantry Division in Germany. The Ivy division of the U S Seventh Army conducted intensive maneuvers and realistic field problems. Laney is a driver in Company D 46th Antiaircraft Artillery Battalion stationed near Port Bila Tew Fort 3. He entered the Army in Septem
C. M. Goad of West Lebanon Street returned home from Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem last week after several days as a patient. He and Mrs. Goad are staying with their daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Tom Samuel, in Banner Town while he recovers and is able to have visitors.
Perry A Fleming seaman USN son of Mr and Mrs Fraud A Fleming of 610 South Street Mount Airy is aboard the attack aircraft carrier USS Intrepid with the 6th Fleet. The ship will return in late November after a six month Mediterranean cruise including NATO maneuvers port visits to 12 ports in 5 European countries and shipboard training exercises.
W D Merritt reported to police a driver hit the wall in front of his father’s Rockford Street home around 1 15 Sunday and fled the scene. The car, a 1948 or 1949 Ford with a Virginia tag, damaged both the vehicle and the wall.
Mrs. T. H. King, longtime Mount Airy resident during her husband’s tenure at the First Baptist Church, died at 77 in Wake Forest last Friday. Burial was held in Clinton. Survived by husband, daughter Mrs. M. S. Faircloth, three sons William G. King Clinton Dr. Robert W. King and Hubert T. King Aiken S C, two brothers W. T. Sledge Hickory H M Sledge Louisburg, and sister Mrs. H. C. Gupton Louisburg.
A2e Arlyss F Jackson son of Mrs Wallace S Jackson and the late Mr Jackson was promoted to his present rating while serving with the 2274th USAF Dispensary Class A at Walters Air Force Base in Mineral Wells Texas. He entered service in August 1954 and wed his basic training at Lackland AFB San Antonio Texas. He is married to Miss Edythe Westmoreland and they have one son Mark. Mrs Jackson and son are making their home in Texas with Airman Jackson.
A nine year old died in a Halloween incident while trick or treating. The notice mentions a door prize of 1000 dollars toward a new Chevrolet, with registration for drivers, plus free coffee, donuts, balloons, and candies. Jack Gaddy Chevrolet on Old Lowgap Road near Mount Airy hosted the event with a 6 p.m. Saturday prize drawing.

Charles Stephen Booker Jr aged 13 died when a farm tractor he was driving overturned at his grandparents home on Piper's Gap highway near Mount Airy. He was a seventh grade student at South Main Street Junior High. Burial followed at Zion Methodist Church cemetery.
Dr George New was elected president of the Mount Airy Kiwanis Club for 1956 at the regular Friday night meeting at the YMCA. He succeeds Kester Sink in January. Ben Graves was elected vice president Fletcher Harris treasurer with new directors Frank Longest Norris Hatcher Carl Peters Bowman George and Dr H C Jackson. Reelect ed directors were Joe Graves and K W Pulliam.
Roger Lew Hiatt of Mount Airy stood first in his section during the Summer quarter at the University of Tennessee College of Medicine in Memphis. The ranking was based on grade averages compiled by registrar Miss Kate Stanley. He continues his fourth quarter course of study starting September 29.
The NEWS covered George Beamer facing trial for hitting a police car and speeding. He was fined 100 dollars plus costs on one count and 26 dollars plus costs on the other. The court clarified he is not the Game Warden George Beamer.
An Ennice man faces manslaughter charges after a 6:15 p.m. Saturday crash on Skull Camp Lowgap Road near Mount Airy killed passenger Charles Ed Crouse, 31. Kyle Evans, 27, driver, was released on 1000 bond. sheriff's office cited a tire blowout at 65 to 70 mph as the cause.
Mrs Jennie Hodges Massey aged 44 died suddenly at her home in Newport News Virginia She was the daughter of Frank and Ollie Hodges of Beulah Church Longap She is survived by husband Charles Massey daughter Mary Fontaine and son Chipper two brothers Elmer Hodges Longap route 1 and Eldridge Hodges Mount Airy route 1 Funeral services were set for Tuesday at 2 p m local time
Mrs Martha Myers Fowler 77 of Mount Airy Route 2 died at home after one week of illness. Born March 7 1878 in Carroll County Virginia to Samuel and Mary Cooper Myers. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the old Fowler home church.
G. C. Hauser reported to police that he lost his billfold containing about 170 dollars last Saturday morning near the post office. He requested its return with papers and offered a reward if found. He noted a prior loss of 50 dollars in silver in the same location years ago and never recovered it.
