Stokes County Man Killed In Car Wreck Near Brown Mountain
Alvin King, 24, of Stokes County, died in a local hospital after a car overturned near Brown Mountain Saturday. His two companions survived unharmed. King, reportedly the driver, suffered a fractured skull and other injuries. Funeral services were held near Danbury last Sunday.

State Accepts Highway Work on Lowgap Route
Inspectors and engineers of the state highway commission visited this city Tuesday and formally accepted the newly constructed part of the Lowgap highway between Laurel Bluff and Beulah school a distance of 78 miles. The road is in splendid condition and next spring will receive a two inch gravel and oil coating. Officials cited settlement delays on big fills as the reason oiling could not occur this fall. About 10 miles of the Longap highway remain to be constructed with assurances for early contracting, though no action has been taken yet.

Train backs into auto at Rockford Street crossing

About 25 Mount Airy residents attended a bear meat supper at Renfro Cafeteria on Tuesday night. The meat, claimed by hunters to be from a North Carolina bear, was later revealed to be veal misrepresented as bear. The incident centered on five locals who hunted in Hertford and returned with the meat, with two admitting the deception and the others serving the veal before police intervened.
