Mount Airy men gather at Blu- Vue Restaurant tonight to organize a local Sertoma club with help from the Winston-Salem group of over a hundred members. The civic club, named from service to mankind, aims to aid youth through community work.
The Mount Airy SERTOMA group weighs establishing a new club needing 25 members to charter. Bob Tannehill has worked to spark interest among residents who lack time or funds for existing civic clubs but want to contribute to the community. A brief weekly luncheon may form the core meeting.
Local officials and the Surry board toured the new North Surry High School on Highway 89 west. Architects and state engineers lauded the construction and contractor team, noting the unique design and quality of work ahead of charter Sertoma meeting tonight at Blu-Vue at 7.
Dennis Wade Moody of the Mount Airy Chamber of Commerce urged a Clean-Up Paint-Up Fix-Up campaign at kickoff. He argued a cleaner city reduces health hazards and fire risks, attracts tourists and potential industry, and signals residents’ commitment to better living and a prosperous future.
Electrical engineer George B Rot tman notes the new school boiler plant is efficient with three boilers and high radiation capacity. Coal is delivered via a cement ramp to a hopper chute, eliminating shoveling. Normally one boiler suffices, two spare for expansion plans and future needs.
The Martin bottom on the south side of East Pine Street was rezoned from residential to business property. The Zoning Commission recommended the change to the city board, with action taken Thursday night. The former owner was Dr Moir 8. Martin. property is held by H. L. and 8. A. Hennis Jr of Mount Airy.
A Helms Motor Lines tractor trailer hit a telephone cable in an alley near The Mount Airy NEWS, knocking out service for five hours to The NEWS and several local businesses including Harrison's Carter Furniture Holcomb's Hardware Advance Store Boyles Shoe Store and the City Tax Collector's Office. Central Telephone Company workers from Mount Airy and Elkin repaired the line, aided by a Jack Gaddy Chevrolet wrecker. The incident disrupted business and police radio operations.
A neighbor spotted flames and firefighters arrived at 12 30 a m Monday to find a small chicken house burning in the back yard of Wallace Johnson on East Lebanon Street. The owner slept in his home and the building was empty.
Clyde Buford Payne twenty one of Mount Airy was not hurt when his car veered off near Beasleys Store on McBride Road Saturday at 3 p.m. The right front wheel separated and lodged beneath the vehicle as it traveled at about fifty miles an hour. The car was a total loss.
Miss Sarah Ann Joyce a senior at Pilot Mountain High School and daughter of Mrs Lolene Joyce of Pilot Mountain has been selected by the Joycees to participate in the Miss Mount Airy pageant set for Friday night June 12. She will be 18 July 14 and plans to pursue nursing at Northern Hospital School of Nursing.
Mount Airy citizens attended Shrine ceremonies in Greensboro on Friday and Saturday. Attendees from Mount Airy included J. C. Hill M F Patterson Ed Brannock Earl Ramey Cullen Odell Paul Callaway A A Hernia Jr Clay Hauser and Jimmy Cox. Odell and Oliver Dobson were initiated into the Shrine on Saturday and are members of the local Masonic Lodge.
Mount Airy officials backed down on a plan to restrict beer sales issuing licenses to Johnny Hicks on Virginia Street and to the Hot Spot Grill on West Pine Street after hearings. Citizens who opposed closures failed to secure enough support at the public hearing.
Mount Airy High School music department repeats Friday night's Spring Concert tonight at 8. The band and glee club again perform with Arnold Ramey and Galie Wright narrations and soloists Carolyn Vaughn and Clark. The program features the Creation theme and Old Negro spiritual pieces.
Mount Airy liquor referendum bill passes Senate with one vote against it. Senator Adam Whitley of Johnston County asked to be recorded as voting no on the Mount Airy measure and any future liquor bills. The measure proceeds to the House for consideration.
Myrtle Hall Moncus aged 56 of Mount Airy was hospitalized with a broken nose after a two car collision on Highway 89 near Laurel Bluff Road. Charlie Moncus, 19, was driving when Andrew Loom of Galax Virginia struck the rear of their car. The crash occurred Wednesday of last week.

In a special assembly at High Point College, Ashes To Be Relieved Of Duty chief Boone resigns after twelve years. Dr. Harold E. Conrad presided as Lambda Chi Alpha presented the Bobby Badgett Memorial Award to Danny Sewell as outstanding varsity athlete of the year.
Chief Monte W. Boone will relinquish his role as head of the Mount Airy Police Department effective June 1. He proposed becoming a police sergeant and will assume sergeant duties after resignation. the board accepted the move with regret and did not name a replacement.
North Carolina State College representatives will discuss engineering services for local textile industries at a Rotary Club luncheon at the Blue Ridge Hotel today at noon. Dr. William W. Austin will discuss facilities. C. W. Hart will answer questions about the Engineering Foundation.
P D Callaway of Round Peak Surry County recuperates in Northern Sur ry Hospital after a Friday night stroke. The 83 year old farmer improved with doctors predicting no lasting effects. He has two sons Ernest and Paul and a daughter Mrs J K Blackburn in Mount Airy.
