United States Army Hawk Herald Trumpets and Fife and Drum Corps gave a lifetime performance last Saturday in Stuart. Police estimate about 7400 attendees filled the venue for a series of ovations as Patrick Counts and committee chairman Jack Cogar praised the event.
The Mount Airy Senor and Junior High School band will give a spring concert Thursday at the Mount Airy school auditorium featuring popular selections for all ages. Admission is $1 per person.
Town officials move toward condemning Brown Garage property owned by W Fulton as part of a five year renewal plan. A three member board will value the property with two appraisers and a third chosen if Fulton fails to name a representative. Public hearing on city designation and Independence Day schedule noted. The board approved park rent restitution and zoning petitions for nearby property and set July 15 hearing to close an unopened street.
Over 350 seniors attended a Senior Citizens Day event at Debaon Elementary on Sunday. A parade of songs, poetry, and door prizes from local merchants marked the observance sponsored by the Surry County Community Action Program and VISTA. The keynote speaker Dr Dale Simmons outlined four primary fears of aging: loss of work, loss of mental and physical strength, fear of reduced sexuality, and fear of death.
Democrats in Surry County move to secure three county commissioner seats and the register of deeds post with two incumbents re filing by Monday and a third likely to file before the Friday deadline. The slate includes Gaston Brinkley and Clayborn Taylor re election bids and Gay York expected to file for Register of Deeds.
Saturday marks Bicentennial Day in Pilot Mountain with a street parade from 2 pm, a fireworks finale, and events from Academy Street to 2nd Avenue. Activities include games, booths, music, fashion show, contests, a beard contest with $8 prizes, a cube steak dinner, square dancing, bluegrass, a flower show, cake sales, a dunking booth, and an antique display.参与者 may enter contests. prizes funded by local banks and organizations.
The Downtown Merchants Association promotion committee announces most stores will stay open Friday evenings until 6 00 pm. The drive cites past gaps in Friday hours and aims to boost shoppers with a Memorial Day sale and weekly events including greased pole and pig contests, parades, and youth volunteer activities led by Lions Club and Rescue Squad. Notable guests include Rep Dave Diamond, Sen George Marion, and local officials.
