The Mount Airy public schools schedule closing events from Sunday through Thursday at Rockford Street auditorium. Rev W E Poovey delivers the sermon The Measure of a Man and the 58 member graduating class receives diplomas after the Senior Class play The Admirable Crichton.
Miss Roxie Thompson of Lowgap suffers a fractured pelvis. Mr Prank Smith of City had his tonsils removed last Saturday. Mrs Thomas Colston of Lowgap is a patient for treatment. Mr J Weldon Parker of Mount Airy is a surgical patient. Mrs G P Hubble of Wytheville Va is a patient for treatment. Mrs Ed Leonard of Mount Airy R 6 is a surgical patient. Mrs Laura Pace, long hospitalized at the Pace residence in this city, is reported to be holding her own and showing some improvement after more than two weeks in the home of Mr and Mrs Will Pace.
The depositors committee and bank officers met at the Bank of Mount Airy on Wednesday to plan continued steps for reorganizing and reopening the bank. Contracts from depositors drive the plan. many signed, some yet to sign, with reopening contingent on securing all contracts.
Dr. T C Britt Surry County Health officer will run a free diphtheria vaccine clinic next Friday Saturday and Monday. Parents with children ages 6 months to 6 years are urged to bring them to Health Department offices for this service.
A truck owned by Jim Dunnegan carrying 120 chicken coops and 700 pounds of poultry collided with a roadster driven by Payton Brannock near Asheland Virginia, killing roadster driver William Reynolds. Brannock, released on 500 dollar bond, faces a preliminary hearing June 8. Reynolds, about 30, single, an insurance agent, died ten hours after the crash.
Joe Fowler announced signing a contract with the Studebaker Corporation to become local agent for the Studebaker line including the Rockne. A Rockne is on hand for demonstrations and deliveries begin July 1. He operates from his North Main street garage and will service the cars.
Hollingsworth Drug Co of this city leases E C Kapp Hardware building and plans a full remodel to create a modern drug store. Work to start in about 10 days with completion in a month. the firm will move from its Blue Ridge hotel block location. Hardware stock to be closed out in 10 days under Lee Sparger, with heavy discounts.
The case between John L. Redman and C. W. Fulton over the Granite City Motor Co Ford agency is settled with Fulton becoming sole owner after purchasing Redman’s stake in the business.
The School of Nurses of Martin Memorial Hospital will hold commencement on Monday evening May 29 at eight o'clock in the North Main School auditorium. Rev. E. S. Olive of North Wilkesboro will deliver the graduation address. Saturday marks Poppy Day as American Legion auxiliary members sell scarlet poppies next Saturday May 27 to aid disabled veterans and widows. The appeal urges wearers to show sacrifice, noting veterans damaged by war now mostly able to craft the flowers and rely on donations for income.
Dr and Mrs I T Jacobs and their two daughters and son plan to move mid next week to Staunton Virginia to start a new home. The First Baptist Church deacons pass resolutions praising their leadership and noting church growth under Dr Jacobs while extending best wishes to them and their new charge.
Alex Reynolds of Galax Virginia was convicted of manslaughter in Hillsville court and received a three year prison sentence. He struck down a girl walking with her father on the Fancy Gap road near the mountain months ago, fled the scene, but sheriff and deputies pursued him to Galax where he was arrested.
Glenwood Gentry, wanted by Welch West Virginia officers for a store robbery over a year earlier, was arrested quietly after being called from the Lowgap high school graduation. He traveled with deputies to the Woodruff store where he was handed to WV officers.
Mrs C C Haymore slipped on the floor of her home Tuesday and fractured the small bone in one arm while trying to catch herself as she fell.
Members of the Knights Templar local commandery will gather at the Robert E. Lee hotel and march in procession to Centenary Methodist Church Winston-Salem for a Sunday service at 3 pm. The sermon will be preached by Grand Prelate Rev David L Wilson of Bath Maine. About 50 local members are expected to attend.
Mount Airy high school athletes from the baseball, football and basketball teams will visit the Kiwanis club at the Blue Ridge hotel Friday night. Coach Underwood will summarize the teams' year and present letters to the boys and girls who earned them. Wallace W of Duke University is noted as a football coach with Rose Bowl ties.
Miss Roberta York won the city beauty contest hosted by Jesse B. Jones Post No 123 of the American Legion in Rockford Street School auditorium. Fifty six contestants entered with four finalists named before York triumphed amid applause. York received a loving cup and a floral basket while a program featured the Carolinians and soloist Louis Bianco.
Mayor Edward Ashby will throw the first ball at Mount Airy’s season opener in the Blue Ridge League with police chief Bob Lawrence behind the plate and Judge Horace Southerland presiding. The event features a parade, field day exercises, and a 25 cent adult admission.
A free cripple examination clinic will be held Friday at the Surry County Health Department offices. Cripples from Surry County and neighboring NC and VA counties are invited. Dr. R. A. Moore of Winston-Salem will be assisted by Dr. Britt of the health office.
Mount Airy golfers place second as Pulaski wins with the lowest score in a Mount Airy Country Club tournament that drew over 75 players. L M Lamm carded 80 for best local score while J W McFall posted 61. Supper and a dance followed the event with Martinsville teams scheduled to visit for the next tournament, about 20 visitors expected.
Mr and Mrs Charles Smith and their children from Nashville Tennessee are visiting Mr and Mrs F L Smith on Reckford street, staying with the latter’s family.
