Elkin town council asks General Assembly to authorize an election on establishing Alcoholic Beverage Control stores. If approved, a summer vote would decide the issue, with profits to be shared as set by the board. A petition signed by over 15 percent of voters prompted the request.
Mount Airy Jaycees outlined plans for the 1965 Christmas parade and the 1965 Miss Mount Airy Pageant at a Blu-Vue Restaurant meeting. President Bill Cobb led discussions as contestants were sought for the August pageant.
Renfro Lodge No 691 AF and AM held a stated meeting at 7 50 PM in the Masonic Temple to honor Worshipful Brother Hylton Wright Past Master of Granite Lodge No 322 with an honorary life membership. J Earl Watson District Deputy Grand Master presented the honor on behalf of Renfro Lodge 601. Worshipful Master William W Wilkins led the meeting and Most Worshipful Sam A Hennis Jr Grand Master of North Carolina made a surprise visit. A social hour followed in the temple dining hall.
A three-teen crash on I-40 near Winston-Salem at 11:30 p.m. killed Paul and Arnold Weatherman of Lewisville formerly Surry County and Robert Thomas Hl of Winston-Salem. Paul Weatherman, 21, worked for Whopper-Burger. Arnold, 19, a Southwest Forsyth senior. Frank C. Davis of Black Mountain drove the eastbound truck. Thermond Foster of Yadkinville reported the rear collision. Funeral services set for Copeland Baptist Church in Surry County on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. Burial in church cemetery.
Federal funds for the Project Headstart program in Surry County are approved with $45,261 allocated to the county from a $427,373 NC pool. About 14 schools host an eight week summer program for pre school children entering first grade next fall. A paid staff and volunteers will guide group play study tours and related activities open to children of all races.
The fourth annual spring athletic banquet will be hosted at Surry Central High School in the school cafeteria tonight. Guest speaker will be Jerry Steele Guilford College head coach. Tickets are available from student body members.
Five candidates vie for three Mount Airy town council seats with Mayor Ed T Clark viewed as virtually certain to win. In Ward One, Maynard Beamer seeks re election against Sgt James Robert McNeil. Ward Two incumbent Fletcher Harris faces Mack Wood. Polls open at 6 30 a m and close at 6 30 p m with about 600 votes expected. results appear in Tuesday’s NEWS.
John B. Wolfe was admitted to Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem on Monday for observation.
Surry Community College named three administrators to guide early operations. James Templeton of Pilot Mountain, Robert Chilton of Mount Airy, and George Stockton of Montreat will serve as Director of Adult and Extension Programs, Director of Academic Program, and Director of Student Personnel respectively. They report for duty in July as construction proceeds for the 1966-67 year.
Mount Airy High School will cap its 1965 class with a three night series at Reeves YMCA. Honor graduates total 39 among 201 seniors. Events include a May 30 commencement sermon by Rev. Ray Troutman and a class night program May 31 led by class president Al Holyfield.
Quotations from Wednesday sales show top hogs to $20.70 and sows up to $18.75. Calves reach $26.30 with heavy tops at $25.50, cows head as high as $189, steers between $18.25 and $22.50, bulls to $13.25. Heifer bids per head range from $62 to $133, cows per head $102 to $189.
Bobby Johnson, 22, an honor grade prisoner, escaped from a road work gang near the Mormon Church in Sheltontown at 11:40 a.m. He fled through fields, sought refuge in a church, and was recaptured near a motor grader at 12:37 p.m. He was barefoot at capture and returned to Yadkin Prison Camp.
