Telegram error twists greeting into death notice
A telegraph greeting to Mr and Mrs M L Lawrence in White Plains for their son Tom now in the armed forces in New Foundland was misread and relayed as a death notice. The error was found Wednesday after the family received the supposed death notification for Tom Lawrence who enlisted Aug 11 last year. Perry Lawrence, another son, began service March 5 and trains at Camp Blanding, Fla.

County Labor Registration Set for May 23

The News received a letter from Charlie Bowman of Ararat Virginia asking the public not to connect him with a recent robbery at the G Lovill wholesale house. Police had arrested a man named Charlie Bowman at the store for attempting to steal cigarettes, but the arrestee lives near the city and is a different person. The Bowman from Ararat is known as a musician who broadcasts on the radio.

Town Board Adopts Bicycle Safety Ordinance
The town commissioners enact rules to curb bicycle danger for children. Violations carry motor vehicle penalties. riders must have rear red reflectors and front lights, keep hands on handlebars, and use sidewalks only where allowed. Bicycles may be impounded 30 days for violations. Parents must prevent violations. Effective May 11, 1942.

Fancy Gap Girl In Tragic Death
Miss Ruth Jones of Fancy Gap was killed when a wood saw blade flew loose and struck her face at a Mount Airy area home. The incident happened Friday morning as she helped operate the saw. the neck was badly cut and death occurred almost instantly. Surviving are her mother and several others. Her father Cris Jones died in a truck wreck about two years ago.
