Plans for the Dairy Month program to be held next Tuesday morning May 26 at the Reeves YMCA Community Center. A Barry County Dairy Princess will be chosen from county home demonstration and civic club sponsors.
The Young Adult Class of the First Presbyterian Church of Mount Airy gave their pastor the Rev. D. S. McCarty a large oil portrait on Sunday. The painting by Mrs. Mary C. McCraw will hang in the ladies lounge. presentation was led by Thomas M. Buck Faw. McCarty has led the church at South Main and Church Streets for 11 years during the closing day of Christian Family Week.
Mr Hoover Adams and his wife and son Brent of Dunn were weekend guests of Jim McMillen executive vice president of the Mount Airy Chamber of Commerce Adams publishes the Dunn Daily Record and McMillen formerly news editor at the Dunn radio station.
State Senator George K. Snow said only two or three carloads of Mount Airy residents oppose the ABC bill as Raleigh hosts a Wednesday hearing. Proponents were advised to expect fewer than a dozen supporters, suggesting an easy path for passage.
The North Carolina State Nurses Association District Three will meet at the Hospital Nurses' Home in Winston-Salem. The public health section presents a program led by speaker Mrs. Virginia O'Connell.
The Belten family reunion will be held Sunday May 17 at Reyn olds Park in Winston Salem. Table No 1 will be used and a picnic lunch will be served at 1 p.m.
Sixteen Franklin School students attended a charter night at the Blue Ridge Hotel as the Airy Kiwanis Club presented the Franklin Key Club charter. Dr. Charles Sykes awarded the charter to Key Club faculty adviser Caries Surate. Officers install included F. C. Carver of Winston-Salem as governor and Byron Bowman as vice president with Wayne Syke secretary and Paul Vernon treasurer. The club meets weekly during activity period or after classes and plans to continue at the new Northern Surry High School in September.
Roddy 25 of Mount Airy sentenced to 3 to 6 years in Dobson Superior Court for the fatal shooting of taxi driver Bobby Jarrell. Jury deliberated over three hours, with an initial report of a 10 to 2 deadlock. Defense lawyers filed a notice of appeal to the North Carolina Supreme Court. Roddy released under a $2,500 bond as Clerk E W Lawrence arrived from Mount Airy with Roddy and family.
Flat Rock High School outlines commencement activities for the upcoming weekend and week. The Sunday ceremony features Rev. Earl Brendall delivering the sermon at 4 pm, with Charles Kirkman salutatory and Arlene Honeycutt valedictory. Thursday diplomas follow Charlies Kirkman named salutatorian and Arlene Honeycutt valedictorian.
Mount Airy considered an American Field Service high school exchange linking local and European students for a year. An APS chapter formed with Rev. Howard B Yow as president and Miss Marjorie Yakley as secretary. Six civic clubs would sponsor at an estimated total cost of 1175 dollars with 650 dollars for the foreign student and 575 dollars for the local participant.
Mrs Faye L Dunbar 48 of route 4 Mount Airy was injured in a two car crash Saturday at 7 am on Highway 89 near Antioch Church. A second driver 71 made a left turn into Haeuser s path. Both cars were heavily damaged and Dunbar may be charged with failing to yield right of way.
Jim Midkiff of the city has accepted a position as branch manager with the Sherwin-Williams Company. He is currently in the Greensboro area detailing a new Graham branch store and was formerly with Bogies Shoe Store.
Irene Rosarge Gnadi 67 of Guantico Virginia died at Northern Surry Hospital after a stay since Sunday. Born May 4 1802 near Mobile Alabama she visited her daughter Mrs Wayne Brannock in town since April 3. The local American Legion Post will meet at 7 30 tonight at Veteran's Memorial Park to hold officer elections.

Mr and Mrs J W Hylton left Friday morning for a ten day vacation in the St Petersburg area, Florida. The couple plans leisure time at local attractions and nearby beaches while enjoying a brief respite from routine duties.
