Dobson Held Against Will Fundraiser For Mission Trip
Dobson United Methodist Church will stage a mass holding against will Thursday morning to raise 2400 dollars. Civic and business leaders will be restrained until payment, supporting Dr. Steve Yokeley and his wife as they prepare to serve in a mission hospital at Ganta Liberia starting in August. Mrs. Katherine Crownfield organized the event.

Miss Betty Ann Cox of Claudeville Va won the 1976 Miss Patrick County crown in a pageant at Patrick County High School. Sponsored annually by the Stuart Lions Club, the event dates to 1952. Miss Cox is the daughter of Mr and Mrs Jack Cox.

Colonial Concert Opens Surry Bicentennial May 16
A program of Early American costumes and music will be held Sunday May 16 at the Mount Airy Fine Arts Center. The event is sponsored by the Surry Community Choir and Surry County Bicentennial Commission. Admission is free and the public is invited.

Ararat Project Advances Surry Bridges High On Priority List
Two Surry County bridges rank among the worst in the state and now top the state priority list for replacement. Construction may start within a year, with Mitchell River bridge on Popular Springs Road and Ararat River bridge on Secondary Road 2019 added to the schedule. DOT cites May 1977 as target for the Ararat bridge, estimated at $550000 to replace the 280 foot structure.

Two Murder Cases Set For Trial In Surry Court
Surry County Superior Court began in Dobson for a two week session. Johnny Walter Pipinos 29 of Flat Rock received a five to seven year suspended sentence in week one. Judy Ann Robinson and Bobby Kaye Myers are set for trial May 1 on separate murder charges. Robinson is charged with killing Ronald A Penn of Mount Airy during a domestic quarrel at a night spot near Mount Airy where Penn was shot.

Second Democrat Files Register of Deeds Primary Assured
The Surry County Register of Deeds primary sees a second candidate, Charles Larry Cooke, 22, Mount Airy, Appalachian State University senior, joining Bud Cameron in the race. Other filings include Elkin resident Bob Hayes, 45, for the 28th State House District, and incumbent challengers Diamont, Collins, and Gentry seeking re election.

More than 150 residents joined the recent beautification effort led by Mount Airy Chamber of Commerce. Bettye Breedlove said the drive raised awareness of town litter and highlighted contributions from Blue Ridge Campers Jaycees Scout Troops and local students. Plans include flag flower plantings around town and a landscaping project at the US 52 US 601 intersection with Martha Rowe and Jimmy Caudle assisting pending funding.
