The Mount Airy Downtown Merchants Association outlined a May 21 event to honor senior citizens from Surry County and nearby areas. President Bob Taylor said over 7,000 residents in Surry County are aged sixty or older, and merchants will offer free prizes gifts and refreshments.
A new county history titled Footprints in the Hollows by the late William Franklin Carter Jr. is released as a joint project of city and county schools and the Surry County Historical Society. Carrie Young Carter compiled it from years of material. Ruth Minick notes it is the second county history, after Jesse Hollingsworth's 1930s work. Distribution begins to schools and libraries with a planned larger print run for sale. Minick calls the publication momentous and valuable for the county's history.
The Red Cross Bloodmobile will visit next week to collect 300 pints of blood. It will operate at Veterans Memorial Park on Monday from 1 a.m. to 4:30 p.m and Tuesday from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Scouts will commence a week long community cleanup Saturday with several scout troops Jaycees and youth groups taking part. The Mount Airy Chamber of Commerce sponsors the effort and urges residents to Do Your Own Thing by cleaning an area of their choosing. Chamber executive VP Jim Grimes noted many groups have signed up to clean designated areas chosen by Town Public Works Director Sam Spencer as among the more neglected parts.
The Town of Mount Airy passes two resolutions to join the National Flood Insurance Program and enforce land use rules to support subsidized flood insurance for residents and businesses in flood plains. The plan includes an inspector reviewing permit applications for new or altered construction to meet federal standards and coordinate with federal agencies on insurance eligibility. Local clean-up efforts led by Jaycees Scout groups and the Chamber aim to tidy Independence Boulevard to Mayberry Mall and other streets, with a Walkathon cleanup advancing in the coming days and evenings.
Mount Airy superintendent Bruce H. Tharrington, retiring June 30 after 28 years, received a silver tray from NCAE at the Mount Airy banquet at Ray's Starlite Restaurant. Cherie Acker was named Mount Airy Teacher of the Year. new NCAE officers were installed by J C Newsome. Dr Dan Griffin delivered the guest speech addressing Vietnam and American leadership.
Mount Airy appoints three to its board of education including former Police Chief David Beal and Clint Mittman Jr the first Black member. Beal Mittman and Jerry Nester will serve three year terms beginning April 1. Mittman 52 assistant warehouse manager at Quality Mills US 52 distribution center native of Mount Airy served in the Army. Beal a Wake Forest graduate has held SBI and police roles and resides on Cherry Street. Nester a UNC Chapel Hill alumnus and Northwestern Bank VP cashier will begin his second full term. Other members include Chairman Ben Graves George Speight vice chairman John Mills and Mrs Alice Lockhart.
Jaycees plan for the March of Dimes Super Walk starting at Veterans Memorial Park Saturday at 8 am with registration at 7 15. Anyone can join by securing a sponsor at roughly one dollar per mile, with ten cents per mile acceptable. Checkpoints are at Cross Creek Country Club Midway Baptist Church Reeves Community Center and Jones Elementary School. The route traces West Lebanon Street Grace Street North Main to Country Club Road Greenhill Road and NC 89 then Pine Street Riverside Drive Jackson Road Jones School Road and back to Grace Street. Immediate participation depends on donations and weather.
Washington report notes Rockford Post Office may close May 30 unless an acceptable community post office bid is received. Only 17 families served, daily mail about 16 inbound and 35 outbound items. Rockford, founded 1770 as Surry County seat, has historical societies backing postmark preservation and town restorations.
Two Pilot Mountain residents, Vicki Lynn Balan and Hubert Oxendine Jr., were sentenced in Surry County Superior Court to up to 10 years each after pleading guilty to the December 7 armed robbery of T. W. Inman's Grocery in Westfield. Balan, 18, was extradited from Dallas, Texas, and Oxendine, 17, aided by driving the getaway vehicle. The robbery netted about $200 as a woman wielding a .22 rifle entered the store.
The Secretary of the North Carolina Department of Corrections will be the featured speaker at the county Republican dinner. David Jones of Raleigh is set as the keynote speaker for the 7:30 p.m. event and tickets will be available at the door.
