North Surry district seeks two more school board members
State Senator Fred Folger introduced a bill to raise the North Surry School District committee from five to seven members. The bill passed the Senate and awaits a House Education Committee hearing next week. The county board may appoint the extra members only if they choose. The district serves 3,300 students with 1,100 at North Surry. Joe A. Pell Jr. chairs the county board.

May Call For Dobson Draft Men From Surry County
Thirty four young men from Surry County averaging about 20 left Dobson yesterday for Charlotte to be inducted into the armed forces. A week earlier another thirty four underwent physical examinations. The latest group is the May total expected by Local Draft Board No. 87.

The Mount Airy Surry County Airport Authority plans a 3 p.m. Sunday dedication at the new all weather facility adjacent to US 52 three miles south of Mount Airy. A fly in luncheon at 1 p.m. and an aircraft display are planned with officials inviting the public to attend. Pilot Mountain Business Leader Dies at 80
William Elijah Matthews of Pilot Mountain, a longtime Pilot Farm Supply Co. owner and tobacco farmer, died Tuesday at Baptist Hospital in Winston Salem at age 80. A WWII Army veteran, he served in the Philippines and Hawaii and held state and local agricultural roles including ASC committee chair in 1960-61 and delegate duties at the North Carolina State College convention. He and his son Charles E Matthews maintained an office with Royster and Coe.
