Surry Truck Driver Killed In Wreck Near Mount Airy
Flowden M. Coker 22 of Lake City died when his tractor trailer jackknifed near White Plains High School five miles from Mount Airy at 6:25 a.m. Tuesday. Ralph Brown 22 of Lake City, riding in the cab, was treated and released. The truck carried cabbage and left the roadway on a hill curve. Coker died before a wrecker lifted the trailer. Coker, born December 7, 1932 in Florence County, was survived by his parents Plowden and Nannie Bell Coker and a brother J L Coker of Scranton.

Mrs. Lillie Mae Thomas of Mount Airy was given four to seven years in the Women's State Prison by Judge Walter E. Johnston in Dobson Superior Court for involuntary manslaughter in the death of her husband Elwood Thomas at their home near Jarrell's Store. SBI agents pursued a second indictment for murder. other cases this week included violations of prohibition, drunken driving and larceny with varied sentences.

City buys six East Church Street lots for Renfro Street plan
Mount Airy will purchase six lots on East Church Street from the Hollingesworth estate for 1350 dollars. Two parcels lie on one side of the street and four on the opposite side. George W. Sparger, a local real estate agent, presented the offer to the city board, giving the city the first option to buy as part of a Renfro Street extension survey. The First National Bank administers the estate.

Mrs. C. B. Webb suffered a broken arm just above the elbow at her home on Monday morning. She was taken by ambulance to Dr. Sutter's office where the bone was set and she is now recuperating at her West Lebanon Street home.

Building To Be Constructed On Franklin Street

30 Gallons of Liquor Found in Automobile
Patrolman Josh Howell arrested two men for prohibition violations after stopping a car on Shorttown Hill. Gravely, driving with a revoked license, and Boyd, both of Mount Airy, were charged as 30 gallons of white liquor were discovered in five cases. Bond set at $600 for Gravely and $300 for Boyd. Liquor poured into a stream near the city limits.

Dog quarantine lifted in Mount Airy township
The Surry County Health Department announced this week that the dog quarantine in Mount Airy township has been lifted after almost a month. The quarantine followed a rabies case traced to a dog from near Hillsville Virginia. Police urge owners to vaccinate dogs and keep tags and collars.

State Highway Patrolman E E LeFurgey and Corporal Tinsley were en route to supper when a Mount Airy man William Andrew Harrison age 21 tried to pass another car and struck their patrol car head on on the Bannertown road near Mount Airy city limits. Work starts Thursday on a nine bed hospital clinic in Dobson with a $90,000 budget. G L Wilson Construction of Salisbury will build a 90 by 110 foot cinder block structure, air conditioned, housing two examining rooms an x ray room a lab minor surgery labor and delivery room a large kitchen patient rooms and doctor offices. The project aims for completion in under 75 days. Dobson Clinic Inc funded by $31,000 from stock and $20,000 borrowed, with Grady Cooper donating two acres of land for the site.
