Over the past two weeks the county health department examined 381 school children in clinics set up in 18 schools. April will continue these exams in remaining schools to weigh, measure, immunize, and prepare children for next year.
Prof L B Pendergraph announces a partial closing program for city schools starting June 1. Dr Sydney B Hall of Richmond will give the literary address and was state superintendent in another city. Rev W E Poovey will deliver the commencement sermon. W A King recovers after surgery in Atlanta last week.
Dan Hawks, about 55, killed himself at his home near Lambsburg Virginia by firing a shotgun into his stomach. His death followed years of ill health and prior suicide attempts while in an asylum for the insane. His wife heard the fall and found him dead.
Funeral services were held in Lambsburg Virginia for Alfred B Daniels aged 101 years and 14 days. He died at home from paralysis and old age. Daniels was born in Henry County Virginia and is survived by his wife Polly Daniels. The service was conducted by Reverend J W Crews.
The exodus of tobacco growers from Surry County to Canada began this week as Dan Hemmings and his wife left for Victoria Ontario to raise tobacco for British landowners. He expects to be away until December 20 and is joined by others planning similar moves. In Canada last year Hemmings produced 25 acres of tobacco, selling 58,000 pounds at 19 cents a pound. In Canada buyers come to barns to seal deals, with tobacco packed in 100 lb bales.
Coleman Riggs widower died March 24 at 11 15 AM from tuberculosis at age 66. Funeral was held from Flat Rock Baptist Church with Rev Joe Hall and Rev Hopkins officiating and interment in Midkiff Cemetery on Route 2.
The Parent-Teacher Associations at North Main and Rockford Street schools sponsor a two day campaign to gather canned goods and fresh vegetables for noon meals. Mrs. T. C. Britt chairs the effort aiding 66 Rockford Street and 65 North Main pupils with milk soup and bread.
The First Baptist Church announces revival meetings starting Sunday led by Dr. I T Jacobs with Rev Eugene Olive directing the choir. A large prayer meeting was held Wednesday and parishioners are urged to invite the unsaved and support the revival in prayers and attendance.
Deputies Harvey Boyd and Jess Monday located and destroyed a steam distillery outfit about two miles west of Dobson. The still operated the night before discovery and 10 gallons of liquor plus about 1,000 gallons of beer were seized. Supplies were brought in by automobile along a cut roadway through brush. No arrests were made. the outfit was a large steamer built from a steel gasoline drum.
Jess Prather Col. a well known city resident aged about 65 shot himself with a Bank of Mount Airy pistol one mile west of town Tuesday night. He was found in his chair with the weapon near his feet and left a note asking to return the gun to the bank. He was survived by a second wife and many children.
Announcement notes the opening of Boyles Shoe Store in the former Hawks Boyles Co. space. The store will offer exclusive family footwear with hosiery, polishes and shoe findings. First floor displays shoes. basement features a selection under 1.98 dollars. W. R. and O. R. Boyles will run the business.
Debating teams from Elkin and Wilkesboro meet here Friday March 31 at 2 30 in the high school study hall to discuss whether North Carolina should adopt a sales tax. Mount Airy teams debate in opposite venues at the same hour with neutral ground and faculty chaperones accompanying each side.
The Girls' Reserve Club at Lowgap High presents Nobody's Darling a three act play by Mary Guill in the school auditorium on Saturday night April 1 at 7 45. A nameless foundling raised by society folk becomes a servant then is returned to her father. Two negro characters provide comedy. Admission 5 10 and 1 cents to fund stage curtains and auditorium pictures.
A joint meeting of all circles of the Woman's Missionary society at Central Methodist Church is set for Monday afternoon at 3:00 in the Sparger room, with Mrs. L. B. Pendergraph presiding. The business women's circle will convene Monday evening at 7:30 at the parsonage, led by Mrs. R. F. P. Collins.
J M Gordon bank cashier received license Tuesday and opened Wednesday with no restrictions. Bank had been closed since government order earlier in the month.
Mrs. Clifford Crissman of Siloam R. 2 and Mr. Pred Tate of Mount Airy R. 4 underwent surgeries for acute appendicitis and related conditions. Baby Frances Hill 17 months old, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. T. E Hill of route 1, had appendicitis surgery. Miss Gertie Cll of Mount Airy had tonsil removal. Miss Martha Jane Gates of City underwent surgery for acute condition. Miss Ida Whitaker of Siloam R. 1 is under diagnosis and treatment. Several patients are listed as medical cases or discharges from Mount Airy and Claudeville.
A group of farmers from this section visited the Standard Fertilizer Co plant in Williamston North Carolina at the start of the week They toured the facility and learned about products sold in Mount Airy by Brown and Simpson The farmers listed include Bud Love Dan Smith John Newsome Harvey Nichols Sanford Marion Grover Anderson Hub Brown Claud Childress Dillon Simpson and Ernest Brown.
Talmage Dowell of Winston-Salem was bound over to a higher court after a crowded preliminary hearing before Judge Harry Barker in Elkin. The shooting at a filling station followed a confrontation with Walter Sale, who was drinking, and witnesses described Dowell pulling and firing a pistol. The hearing moved to Dobson for safety and crowd control.
The women of the missionary society at the First Baptist Church will hold a bake sale on Saturday April 8. They will offer home baked cakes pies cheese straws and cookies. The sale location will be announced later.

The Surry Health Department completed grading of county dairies under the U.S. Public Health Service code. Grade A milk certificates were awarded to Mount Airy and Pilot Mountain dairies, while J. C. Dunbar dairy was lowered to Grade D after equipment changes were recommended to meet Grade A standards.
