Siloam Methodist Church Destroyed By Fire
A fire Sunday destroyed the Siloam Methodist Church near Mount Airy with an estimated loss of 40000 dollars. Fire crews from Mount Airy Boonville Vienna and Lewisville battled the blaze for hours as posing weather and frozen hoses slowed efforts. Insurance covered about 5000 of the loss and plans to rebuild are underway with no temporary meeting place yet chosen. The church founded in 1932 serves about 80 members and Reverend Jack Kaylor has been preaching there on specific Sundays.

Four Orchards Report Complete Peach Loss in South
In Surry County and across three southern states a cold wave froze peach crops and damaged apples. Boy Finds Air Force Radio Sonde In Parachute Device
A boy in his early teens found a white eight inch box with a clear plastic appendage and balloon near his home and brought it to the local police. The item, labeled United States Air Force Radio sonde, was harmless. It had been carried aloft from Knoxville Tennessee to gather upper air data for weather forecasting and should be sent to McLellan California for repair and relaunch.

Lowgap Wildlife Club Offered to Help Police Illegal Fishing
At a Lowgap Wildlife Club meeting about 200 members were urged by a state game warden to assist in policing out of season trout fishing. The club, which meets monthly, also voted to patrol roads to the lake, fertilize surrounding land, and sow grass. The next meeting is April 7 at Lowgap High School.
