Prisoner Lt Nelson Allred Reported Missing in Action

The War Department reported Lt Nelson Allred, a U S Army Air Forces pilot, captured by the German government after a North Africa bombing mission around February 1. He is described as wounded but without details on his condition. A cable to Red Cross in Switzerland seeks more information.

Returns From Trip To Africa

Lt. John A Simpson returned from Oran North Africa and visited Mr and Mrs R E Poorest. A native of Vanceboro NC he served with the NC Revenue Department before enlistment and flew with a squadron making several visits to the city. He reports much action in the northern Africa sector and says the situation looks encouraging as the boys press on.

Death of Mrs. Tom Gentry in Dillon South Carolina

Mrs. Tom Gentry died March 11 at the home of her daughter Mrs. P. M. Pitts in Dillon 8. C. The Gentry family once lived here where Mr. Gentry worked as a tobacco buyer. They later moved to South Boston Virginia where he died. Mrs. Gentry had sufferred declining health for years.

Four Puckett Brothers in Army and Navy Service

Four brothers of Mrs. Mary B. Puckett from Flat Rock Mount Airy serve in the armed forces. Orson Puckett enlisted in the army in 1943 for three years and previously served in the marines. he is a master technical sergeant stationed at Norfolk Virginia. Joseph A. Puckett has fourteen years in service with two shifts in Hawaii. he is a master sergeant stationed at Fort Jackson South Carolina. Wilford H. Puckett enlisted January 1941 and is stationed at Fort Leonard Wood Missouri. Warren C. Puckett, technical sergeant, about three years in service, is in North Africa with the last letter dated January 27 from North Africa.

Price Violator Arrested Here Over Poultry Ceiling Case

U S S commissioner A E Creed heard the case Monday afternoon binding Bitzick over to the May term of Federal court with a $1000 bond. Investigators reported Bitzick bought 3088 pounds of hens at 30 percent per pound. Attorneys from the district OPA office prosecuted the case. This marks the second poultry ceiling price prosecution in this region.

W L Sydnor Is Claimed By Death

W L Sydnor dies at Martin Memorial Hospital after a pistol wound. He led Sydnor Insurance, owned real estate, served on the town board, and was a WWI veteran and Legion official. Survived by widow Carma, children Princes Lee Shirley Granville, sister Morgan Simmons, and brothers Gray and Frank. Funeral held at Central Methodist with local and out of town mourners attending.

Trio Held For Assault Charge

Pedro Johnson aged 31, long sought in the county on multiple charges, was arrested after a posse of about 25 men surrounded a house in Marsh township and he surrendered. He faces charges of assault and robbery of James B. Callaway and also allegedly violated selective service laws. The Callaway incident began when the elderly farmer was in his corn crib.

Yokley to Lead Surry War Bond Drive in April

J F Yokley is named chairman of the War Finance Committee for Surry County directing a second war loan drive in April. The nationwide target is 13 billion dollars with North Carolina and Surry County quotas undetermined. The campaign runs April 12 to May 1 with a merged War Savings Staff and Victory Fund under the U S Treasury. Aims include reaching buyers for bonds as small as eighteen dollars and seventy five cents.

Bus and milk truck crash kills Mrs. Woodruff near Highland Park

A city bus carrying 16 passengers and a milk truck collided on a highway near Highland Park early Thursday. Mrs. Jesse Woodruff died from a head injury. 9 others were treated and 4 held for observation. Ora Quesinberry drove the bus. Moir Marsh, 17, drove the milk truck. Funeral services for Mrs. Woodruff were planned at the Baptist Church.

Pfc Warren Pike of Brim Kansas writes from the Ordnance Automotive School in Marysville that The News is a welcome guest. He joined the army in November 1942 and his March 20 letter praises the paper for keeping soldiers informed and entertained.
