Two Air Force Men Injured In Road Accident Near Springs Road
Two airmen from Mount Airy sustained head injuries when their car ran off Springs Road near 104 intersecting road to Jones Negro High School. Ervin Cook of 123 Hillcrest Avenue and Bud Folden of Roanoke Virginia were hospitalized after the vehicle rolled, landed in a stream, and was demolished. Folden, visiting with Cook, said he traveled about 40 mph before gravel caused the overturn.

Surry Citizens Attend Democratic Club Dinner in Washington
About 12 to 15 Surry County residents joined the North Carolina Democratic Club’s Nineteenth Annual Congressional banquet at the Mayflower Hotel in Washington. More than 110 from the 5th District attended. Sen. Ervin and Sen. Kerr Scott spoke before a dance. Attendees from Mount Airy and Elkin joined, with other county representatives, as well as Forsyth County Democrats. The 5th District trophy for attendance was awarded to Congressman Thurmond Chatham’s district, with many NC lawmakers introduced to the crowd of about 500.

Traffic Detour This Week On Highway 52
State Highway and Public Works Commission officials announced a temporary closure of Highway 52 south of Mount Airy and Pilot Mountain to finish construction. The project aims to complete the new highway in two to three months with old pavement removed at Tom's Creek near Pilot Mountain and widening in that area. Traffic will be detoured via N C 601 through White Plains to Level Cross to Pilot Mountain.
