Rain Eases Fire Danger in Surry County
Rainfall today should cut the forest fire threat that has plagued the area for days. N C Forest Service Ranger Eddie Rose said moisture could delay fires, while a statewide ban on wind permits begins to lift later Monday depending on rain. Through two months, more than 19,000 acres of timberland burned statewide, and Surry County reports multiple weekend fires. Fire crews, volunteers, and the Turner Mountain fire tower remain in service as smoke relief and aerial assets are positioned from Asheville to Wise, with a Fairchild C 119 Airtanker stationed at Asheville airport.
