Weekend Grass and Woods Fire Threatens Homes near Franklin
Firefighters battled multiple blazes over eight acres during the weekend. In Franklin near the old airport, several houses faced danger as winds shifted repeatedly, causing flames to leap to new areas. Twenty five firefighters aided by the Forest Service fought the Sunday blaze starting around 12:45 pm, with the effort lasting about two hours on steep, brushy hillsides. The Mount Airy Rescue Squad stood by until the fire was controlled around 6 pm, and the department’s bush buggy was damaged in the effort.

Domestic quarrel leaves Mount Airy man gravely hurt
Roger Newman, 24 St., was shot four times at home Sunday night in a domestic incident. His wife Linda Newman, 23, allegedly fired twice in the shoulder once in the rib cage and once in the back. He is in critical but stable condition after transfer from Northern Surry Hospital to Forsyth Memorial. Police also report break in at Eddie's Zip Foods on Hylton St with only pennies taken. Additional thefts and several fires kept Mount Airy firefighters busy over the weekend.
