Mount Airy merchants will close July 4 in observance of Independence Day with stores open Friday. Most manufacturers operate, except one large textile plant. All financial institutions and local and county government offices close. No city or rural mail deliveries.

Otis Harold, operator of the Hot Spot Grill on West Pine Street, reported Tuesday night break in. Entrance gained by pulling a screen and breaking the front window. About $5 in pennies and a carton of cigarettes stolen. Suspected to be by young boys.

Two Hurt In Wreck Near Mount Airy
Two people were injured late Tuesday when two cars collided head on on U S 52 about three miles north of Mount Airy during a heavy rain. Mrs Kenneth Smith of Canton Illinois and Morgan Combs 21 of Mount Airy Route 5 were taken to Northern Surry Hospital. Neither was seriously hurt. Mrs Smith rode as a passenger with her husband who drove north. Combs drove alone south. Both cars were demolished.

Mrs Edwards 65 Will Be Buried Friday At Mount Carmel Church
Mrs Laura Alice Edwards 65 died at the home of her daughter in Mount Airy after a long illness. Born May 6 1892 in Surry County she was the widow of Warren Edwards. Surviving are six sons four daughters and many grandchildren. Funeral 4 PM Friday at Mount Carmel Baptist Church with Rev Paul Hester and Rev Cabel Bowman officiating. Burial in church cemetery.

Women convicted of pouring hot liniment on babysitter in Mount Airy
Three Mount Airy women Mrs. J. W. Peele 62 Mrs. Mary Hiatt and Mrs. Peggy Dollyhite were convicted in Recorder's Court of assaulting babysitter Mrs. Sarah Hodges. They received 80 days in jail suspended for two years and fines totaling 100 with court costs. Hodges testified the trio rushed in tied her hands poured hot liniment then fought.

Radar patrol to boost North Carolina road safety week
State Highway Patrol announces day and night duty in Surry County for the July 4 period. Six patrolmen, including Cpl Tensley of Elkin and J W Edwards of Pilot Mountain, will monitor all county highways with radar, speed watches, and check stations for 10 days. Unmarked cars will patrol, and enforcement of reflector and red light rules for trucks will begin.

Johnny Haynes Returns Home From Burn Hospital
Johnny Haynes eight year old son of Mr. and Mrs. John Bill Haynes returned Wednesday of last week to his home on route six after a 125 day stay as a patient at Baptist Hospital in Winston Salem. He was among the more seriously burned victims of the Flat Rock School fire on February 22. Two other severely burned children, Frankie Hensley and Marsha Ann Semones, remain hospitalized. Johnny’s condition is improved and his morale is favorable. He will visit Baptist Hospital daily for physio therapy for the hands lost several fingers. The family thanks friends for support and sympathy shown during hospitalization.

James Merritt a Naval ROTC midshipman at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill will sail July 6 from Norfolk Virginia aboard the destroyer USS Turner DDR for a month long cruise. The group includes one cruiser 12 destroyers and 12 destroyer escorts with port calls at Boston and Quebec. Merritt will return to Norfolk on August 7 and is the son of Mr and Mrs Haywood Merritt Jr of the city.

Mount Airy Plans Budget With 1.50 Tax Rate
The city adopts a tentative $390,450 budget for 1957 58 with a $1.50 per hundred valuation tax rate. Police Traffic Control and Recorder's Court total 82,950, Water and Sewer 79,000, Street 72,000, Juvenile Court 8,900, and Capital Reserve 19,500. Revenues include 466,000 in taxes and additional state returns totaling about 51,500. The budget, posted at City Hall, awaits approval at the July 2 meeting when Maynard Beamer and James B. Combs will be sworn in.

Mount Airy Postmaster Thomas B. Ashby said Washington orders raise several postal rates starting July 1, boosting yearly Post Office Department revenue by about 28 million dollars.
