Citizens debate site location with varied views on building placement near the fairgrounds versus central town. Some cite space for gym and cafeteria, while others warn against northern/southern accessibility and potential distractions near attractions.
National Guard Commander James Bray said that men who join the National Guard before the president signs the draft bill will be exempt from the draft. The telegram from Washington indicates 17 and 18 year olds may enlist but must register at 19. Veterans 19 to 25 with under 12 months active service will not be drafted if in the Guard. Meetings are held Mondays at 7:30 P.M. at Veterans Memorial Park.
Huge Cattle Show Will Be Featured Here Monday July 5 Cattle Shows advance cattle breeding in the county area Jersey Cattle Show at Mount Airy Veterans Memorial Park with 50 Jersey breeders from Ashe Allegany Wilkes Surry Yadkin Stokes Forsyth. Dr Dean W Colvard NC State College to classify demonstrate and judge using Danish system. Entries due July 5 with classes for calves yearlings bulls cows aged cows get of sire and products of dam. Prizes planned for junior Jersey breeders.
Hugh Holcomb was chosen president of the Mount Airy Lions Club for the fiscal year starting July 1. The slate includes Tanner as vice president John Geiger Frank Smith Walter Hyston Hoyle Broome with officers and directors named. The club highlighted its blind work along with exams glasses and operations and noted awards for long service and perfect attendance.
In Surry County and Mount Airy the second Democratic gubernatorial primary draws sparse crowds as neither Charlies Johnson nor Kerr Scott visits the area. Campaigners push turnout with polls opening 6:30 am to 6:30 pm Saturday and officials returning from the 61st primary. Johnson led six candidates countywide in the first primary with 2981 votes. Scott followed with 2336.
Polio upsurge feared in Surry County after eight cases this year. The latest involves Susan Ruth Brinkley, 13 months, of Pilot Mountain route 1, taken to Morganton Emergency Polio Hospital after attempts at other facilities. Other county cases include Douglas W. Childress, 5% months. J. B. Childress. James Shumate. Robert Shumate. Donald Flynn. Dobson Paul Prynn. Wallie Johnson. Claude Johnson. Lonnie Snow. James Snow. Wayne Hiatt. J A Hiatt. Cleo Stanley. Grover Stanley.
Bertha Hawks Farris 18 shot herself in the left breast at her 133 Broad Street home Sunday morning at 10 30. Coroner J L Woitz ruled death by own action and no foul play is suspected. Witness James H Watson Jr 17 testified seeing the shooting as Mrs Parris did not speak. Funeral services were held at Plat Ridge Missionary Baptist Church with burial in the church cemetery. Survived by sisters Roxie Annie Hawks and Mrs Aaron France.
D Timan president of the m and Chitterlings Club in wiry County announced that the organization will meet July 1 at Blue s Hotel at 7 o clock. The dinner menu includes frog legs and turtle soup. Members planning to attend should reserve with Mr Inman or Dr Carl Thomas.
Charles Snell, 61, of Olean, New York, died Thursday at home after a three month illness. He will be buried Saturday in Thomasville. He is the brother of Mrs. B. H. Williamson of this city, who left Thursday to await his brother's body.

Mrs Beas G Davenport resigns as Assistant Home Demonstration Agent for Surry County effective June 30 after four years. She leaves to devote full time to home duties. Angela Taylor of Danbury North Carolina replaces her starting July 1. she is daughter of J John Taylor and has a B A from Salem College and training at Charlotte Memorial Hospital School of Dietetics.
Thomas Leland Largen of Hillsville Virginia, a Medical College of Virginia sophomore, won the Robert Bryan prize for 1948. The memorial prize was established by the late John Stewart Bryant in memory of his brother. Award presented by Mrs Maude Largen of Hillsville.
Annual safety awards announced for Central Telephone Company employees. Col. L. D Densmore, division manager, says thirty five workers in the North Carolina District were honored, with recipients including W. Beddingfeld and Mount Airy staff. Gold certificates issued for ten years of accident free service. white certificates for under five years without accidents.
Postmaster Henry Folger announced expansion of mail delivery to several streets. Residents urged to number houses and install mail boxes and to address mail with street and house number for Burke Development Ayers Alley Council Street Orchard Street Extension North South Pippen Street Mill Street Sides Street Virginia Street Schafer Street Moore Avenue Extension Hamburg Street London Lane Lower Spring Street Newsome Street Penn Banner Street Sunset Drive Rockford Street South South Haymore Street and Andrew Street.
Mayor W F Carter Jr proclaims June 7 to July 3 as clean-up week urging residents to gather trash and rubbish for city removal. Citizens may call city hall to request a pickup when ready for rubbish removal.
Charlies B. Colvard of Crumpler has started as production manager at Surry Dairies. He studied at Berea College and earned a dairy manufacturing masters at NC State. He is brother of Dr. Dean Colvard who will judge Jersey cattle at the July 4 show at Veterans Memorial Park on Monday July 5.
Residents of Burke Development signed a petition representing over 50 percent of property owners asking the town to extend its city limits. Additional petitions from Wrenn Oprologment and the Simpson area were presented, with Oakdale Street residents also signing but not yet presenting. Officials plan to wait for all petitions before deciding on the extension.
Masonic District in Mount Airy plans a two session gathering on August 7. Officers meet at 2 30 p m, a fish fry occurs at 6 30 p m at Veterans Memorial Park, and an evening session at the Masonic Temple follows with Dr Maxwell E B Hoffman of Asheville as main speaker.
Marine Master Sergeant Avant M Brannock of Mount Airy, son of Mr and Mrs PF M Brannock, earned pistol honors with a strong combined score in a Marine competition.
