Dobson Center Nears Completion for Community Use
A Dobson community center, broken ground in 1976 and now near completion, aims for occupancy by mid August. Located at Cooper and James Streets the 32 by 88 foot brick veneer facility includes a 200 person main hall and a basement handicapped daycare for 25 children funded by donations and other support. The project relies on a largely local funding effort with a projected $75 000 cost and a remaining $40 000 needed.

Meadowview public housing in Mount Airy is near completion on a $92 000 modernization replacing gravity oil heaters with electric wall units. Executed by Floyd S Pike Electrical Contractors, the project financed by a HUD modernization loan includes attic insulation. Meadowview, the city’s oldest project at nearly 14 years, remains on a waiting list with about 15 percent turnover in family units and rents pegged to income. Elderly Westfield Farmer Killed in Tractor Accident
Robert Dewey Inman aged 78 died when his tractor overturned on a sloped field near a pond in Westfield. Fire crews found him pinned under the rear wheel around 10 p.m. The Surry County medical examiner ruled death at the scene, with about two and a half hours elapsed since the accident. He was described as still active and fond of working in tobacco.
