Spring and Summer Fish Die Offs Happen in Farm Ponds
North Carolina State extension wildlife specialists say spring and summer die offs in farm ponds are not unusual. Weather shifts with warm sunny days followed by cool cloudy periods trigger early morning die offs. Oxygen depletion in hot still weather causes summer die offs. running an outboard or pumping air can help. Overpopulation, silt, agricultural chemicals, diseases, and parasites may contribute. control is often impractical and costly.
