Oppenheimer Admits Communist Ties Amid Atomic Probe
Dr. Frank Oppenheimer testified before the House Un-American Activities Committee that he joined the Communist Party from 1937 to 1941 and again from 1941 to 1947 supported wartime atomic work but left the party before continuing on. He denied any espionage knowledge and resigned as assistant professor at the University of Minnesota while his brother J. Robert Oppenheimer remains a leading figure at Los Alamos and the Atomic Energy Commission advisory council. The hearings also touch on loyalty clearances for atomic workers and a Hanford plant project cost escalation from 6.3 million to about 26 million dollars.
