Ex Elkin title holder wins crown in North Carolina
Kathy Fleming Miss Appalachian State captured the Miss North Carolina title at the pageant in Winston Salem. The Hamptonville native, 21, earned about 8000 in scholarship and prizes and will compete in the Miss America pageant in Atlantic City in September.

Riverside Park Opens Dedication At Mount Airy
More than 250 people attended the opening and dedication of Riverside Park on Sunday. City officials said the park was heavily used through a 11:30 p.m. closing. Mount Airy Mayor W Maynard Beamer traced the project history, noting nearly five years of planning and design. The $190,000 park was developed by John S Clark Inc with fifty percent federal funding from a Bureau of Outdoor Recreation grant.

Surry County Plagued by Illiteracy Ranks High in State
A state report places Surry County in the top quartile for illiteracy. Max Blackburn of Surry Community College notes many adults struggle with reading and writing, prompting reading improvement programs in Surry and Yadkin counties. The Highway Safety Research Center reports 15.1 percent of license applicants in Surry require an oral picture book test.

Mount Airy hosts a clown contest as part of the Fourth of July parade with a $5 prize. Judges are Rev. Charles Adams and Johnny Edwards. Teenager Dies In Wreck Near Dobson
Mount Airy teen Ricky Dale Bowman 19 of Surry Avenue died at the scene from a fractured neck and internal injuries after a one car crash on rural road 2221 south of Dobson. Passenger Michael Dean Lankford 18 of Atkins Street was treated for multiple contusions and released. Bowman is the county’s eleventh traffic fatality for the year.
