Lowgap Road to be State Highway Approved by Officials

State highway commissioner Alex Hanes recommended taking the Lowgap Road from this city to the Alleghany line into the state system. A. E. Smith and Chairman Doughton backed the move, with plans to use prison labor for road work and to extend the route toward Sparta. The decision follows earlier state action on the Pilot Mountain to Fairview segment, and funds from a multi county road program. Surry County seeks to apply the funds to road bonds rather than local road projects.
