Surry County Board awarded contracts for the Flat Rock School building project with six classrooms and a cafeteria. G. L. Wilson Co. won the general contract at 95,500 and Davis Heating Co. received the heating award at 9,43, plumbing went to Statesville Plumbing and Heating Co. at 7,200 and Modern Electric Co. secured the electrical contract at 14,947. The board also assigned pupils for the 1957 58 term and appointed school principals for several county schools.

YMCA Essay Contest Winners Are Announced
The Reeves YMCA announced the winners of the second annual contest sponsored by The First National Bank The Surry County Loan and Trust Company and the Workmen's Federal Savings and Loan Association. Three grand prizes of a $25 Savings Bond YMCA family membership and summer swimming were awarded to top essays in three grade groups from nine schools. Group I Mount Airy area winner Vance L Hallman Jr of North Main School. Group II winner from White Plains School. Group III Byron Bowman of Franklin School, who also won last year. Additional group winners and 69 classroom winners shared memberships and summer swimming prizes.

Big Black Bear Seen By Six On Sparger Road
Six residents of Sparger Road reported a huge black bear on the road while returning from work in the city Wednesday afternoon. The sighting occurred about a half mile from Guy Sparger’s home in Stewart’s Creek township as a car carrying Mrs. Carpenter and others passed the bear.

Mrs. Rosetta Danley Fulk Dies at 71
Mrs. Rosetta Danley Fulk, 71, of Mount Airy route 4, died Monday at Northern Surry Hospital after a long illness. Born June 13, 1885 in Surry County to Isaac and Lucinda Atkins Danley, she is survived by a daughter, several stepchildren, a brother, a sister, and half siblings. Funeral services were held at Union Primitive Baptist Church with burial in the church cemetery.

Sawyers Receives Promotion Amid Military Service
Charles Wayne Sawyers, son of Mrs. Edna Sawyers of Pilot Mountain Route 2 and the late Everette Sawyers, has been promoted in the army. He entered service last January and completed a radio course in anti air craft guided missile school at Fort Bliss in July 1956. He trained at Fort Jackson and recently informed his mother of a broken foot from an accident, but is recovering satisfactorily.

Car Found Burned Near Greenhill Road Off Highway 52

Wreck Victim Visited Here Day Before Death
Mack W. Sloan a 36 year old Winston Salem truck driver for Quality Oil died when his gasoline truck crashed near Rocky Mount Virginia. A chain broke causing crossties to fall into his path. Sloan who was visiting Granite City earlier in the day was a famed checker player and champion in Winston Salem and the 1956 Piedmont NC checker title holder. He is survived by his wife Norma and daughter Eula Mackine and his father D W Sloan. Funeral arrangements were incomplete.
