Haywood Gates in Serious Condition at Martin Memorial Hospital
Haywood Gates a Mount Airy quarry worker was admitted Sunday May 30 to Martin Memorial Hospital with blood poisoning in the face and described as very serious. Doctors report some improvement but life remains at risk and daily costs include 106 dollars for hospital care plus 27 dollars for three nurses. The Mount Airy News invites gifts to aid Gates and family, routing through its office on Moore Avenue.

Explosion Rocks City After Unexplained Blast
At about 10 46 Saturday a blast near the quarry shocked the city with Bill Simmons reporting the concussion. Patrolmen, a game warden, and local officials searched the area for clues but found none while locals blamed boys for black powder detonations. John Frank refuted quarry origin, suggesting dynamite possibly left from last week and ignited by lightning.

Funeral services for Private James William Rule 22 of Mount Airy were held with Rev. D B McCarty Rev James E Rink and Chaplain J B Gardner and the local American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars Posts. Burial was in Oakdale Cemetery. Rule was born in Roanoke Va January 20 1922 and died in Saipan July 8 1944 after service with the Fourth Marine Division. He enlisted July 4 1940 and served overseas 1941 1943 and 1944. Surviving are his parents Archie and Kate Gwyn Rule two brothers Archie Jr and Samuel R Rule one sister Mrs Jean Simmons and grandparents Mr and Mrs Charlie Gwyn.

Fox Hunters To Meet Saturday At Cumberland Knob
About 150 fox hunters are expected for a gathering at Cumberland Knob in Longapore on Saturday afternoon. Main Street To Be Paved Again In Mount Airy
The State Highway Commission awarded the resurfacing contract to Atlantic Biluthic Company of Washington for 91 miles in Mount Airy and Pilot Mountain at a cost of 15177. The work will start at Cherry Street and run to Hines Avenue with machine laid asphalt. Traffic will be halted for 24 hours on the lay day.
