Voters in Mount Airy will go to the polls in June to choose three town council members for four year terms. From Ward One Marty M A and Charles posed are among unopposed candidates on the ballot. Balloting was light yesterday as ballots continued to arrive at presstime.
At Surry Central High School Friday the principal R O Lanier presented a lengthy awards list. Honors included Susan Norman and Philip White. Danford Foundation awards went to Gwyn Kidd and Dennis Miller. Yearbook honors went to Kay Peid and Libby White. School paper kudos went to Debbie White, editors Marcia Venable and Linua Fowler.
Amvets members elected Ben Callahan Jr as one of six vice commanders and Enos Curris as Piedmont District commander at the North Carolina state convention in Winston-Salem. About 200 members from across the state attended the meeting, which followed a two day session.
Sprightly Miss Mary Bet Hay ends a near forty year career in Surry County schools with eight years at Dobson Elementary. A noon luncheon at Bli-Vue Restaurant honored her as fellow teachers and officials extended best wishes for her retirement. Principal G B Motsinger and Superintendent J Sam Gentry spoke at the head table.
Miss Haymore, a native of Surry County, retires from Dobson High School after a career spanning Shoals School Flat Rock Elkin city schools and Dobson. She earned a BS in 1953 from Western Carolina College and held an AT M teaching certificate. Her retirement honors include a silver bowl engraved with her name and date.
Kenneth Wade Haynes, 23, of 691 Willow Street, was arrested by Patrolman Jimmy Sawyers after threats to life and a concealed pistol. He faced charges of public drunkenness carrying a concealed weapon and assault with a deadly weapon after an incident on Willow Street.
The civil suit by three deacons and trustees of Little Mountain Baptist Church to restrain the pastor from serving was continued to a later term. The hearing, originally set for 2 p.m. yesterday, was postponed.
Deputies pursue Donald Underwood after a Thursday arrest at Tastee Freez in Bannertown ended with his handcuffs missing. Glenn Junior Potts, 20, was jailed for aiding and abetting a weapon offense and resisting an officer but released on bond. Underwood is still at large with a warrant alleging concealed weapon, resisting arrest, and assault on an officer.
Funeral services for Mrs Mabel Willow Mirsot were held Saturday at the Chapel on the Hill following her death Friday at Northern Surry Hospital. Born in Stokes County to Gaston and Nannie Tuttle A Jen, she worked for many years as a nurse in Mount Airy and was survived by her husband Louis and several relatives.
Russell Mack Edwards, 43, of Cane, Virginia, was found not guilty in Carroll County Circuit Court of the February 18 shooting of James Porter Gray near Cana. The defense contended the shot was accidental after a fight at the restaurant. Gray died hours later from a chest wound.
Reverend and Mrs Hugh Smith return to their home near Owgap after visiting Reverend and Mrs Walter Cross in Kenly. District social notes mention Mrs Claude Smith and Greenville South Carolina as part of the travel context.
Surry Community College trustees voted to establish the Robert Burrus Memorial Fund to equip the trustees’ conference room. Burrus, first chairman of the board, died last month. donors will be asked to send checks to the college memorial fund. Officers’ election was postponed to the July meeting and three trustee reappointments will be announced then.
The Carolina-Virginia Wagon Train will camp at Lowgap Thursday night on its hike from Jonesville to Galax Virginia. About 40 wagons and 150 riders will travel and events include square dancing and a Friday night awards presentation.
