Mount Airy High School alumni presented a scrapbook of 400 comments and a $1,368 gift to retiring Principal H. M. Finch after 33 years. The Reeves YMCA ceremony followed the 201 seniors’ commencement as Finch received a standing ovation and a commissioned oil portrait for the school lobby.

Farm Pond Claims Life Of North Surry Senior
Ronald D. Carson an 18 year old North Surry High School senior drowned at a farm pond eight miles north of Mount Airy shortly before graduation. He swam across the pond, panicked, and drowned despite rescue attempts by cousins and rescuers. He is survived by his parents and grandparents and funeral services were held at Chapel on the Hill.
