Flat Rock residents held a straw vote to choose school attendance for their children. The result 274 favored staying with the county schools and 236 backed sending students to Mount Airy city schools amid the Surry County consolidated high school project.
Celanese Corporation of America says it has no immediate use for 76 acres bought at Siloam in Surry County. A textile division official in Charlotte says plans may be years away and there is no idea of building a plant there. An unnamed source claimed a two story facility 300 by 900 feet could employ about 1000 workers.
Mr and Mrs Calvin Sawyers of Cana Virginia announce the birth of a son William Vincent on May 9 at Hillsville Hospital Mrs Sawyers is the former Miss Essie Haynes
Westfield School Principal John A. Cox resigns to take a similar post at Summerfield High School in Guilford County. A school committee member says they deeply regret his departure and credit his leadership with sparking wide awake efforts at Westfield.
Mr and Mrs Ed Lovill move into a newly built ranch house on Country Club Road this week. The home has been under construction for months and features modern amenities. Mrs Lovill is the daughter of Mr and Mrs P N Taylor of White Plains.
Linda Ann Lovill four year old daughter of Mr and Mrs Ed Lovill of North Main Street is recovering in Northern Hospital after a Friday morning operation to remove a quarter that became lodged in her stomach following ingestion Thursday afternoon. She is reported to be recovering satisfactorily.
Mount Airy honors movie star Andy Griffith on his 31st birthday with a key to the city. Mayor W F Carter Jr and a 15,000-strong crowd greet Griffith as he tours Main Street in a parade led by the Mount Airy High School Band.
Weldon B. Denny announces plans to identify discounted flue-cured tobacco varieties Coker 139 140 and Dixie Bright 244 for 1957 support at half the rate. Farmers will receive limited support marketing cards and certify on each farm if discounted varieties are grown with penalties for false statements. Field determinations start after June 28, with proofs of nonproduction resting on the operator.
One hundred fifteen Catawba College seniors received diplomas at the Salisbury commencement. President A R Keppel awarded the B A degree to Gary F Pruett son of Mr and Mrs George E Pruett. He played football and was active in campus activities including the Advertising Club. He is a Business Administration major and plans to work with Wachovia Bank and Trust Company after graduation.
Mr and Mrs Emmitt E Clifton of Lowgap announce the birth of a daughter Yvonnea Kay weighing 7 pounds 1 ounce on May 30 at the Hinia te geet.
Beavers introduced into the Lowgap Wild Life Club lake have begun damaging boat hulls. Owners consider protective options including creosote coating or metal sheet coverings. Nearby farmers report unwanted beaver dams on local streams.
Nine men were arrested on gambling charges and one on operating a gambling house during a 3 a.m. raid Saturday May 18 at the home of P. H. Hawks near Lambsburg. The operation, under surveillance for some time, disrupted card games upstairs as officers seized playing cards and a small amount of money.

Nine individuals named Mose ly Payne Combs Lyons Easter Edwards Newsome Smith Smith were arrested on gambling charges. Hawks faced a separate charge of operating a gambling house.
