Acre of marijuana seized near Ararat in Surry County
Deputies confiscated a one acre field of marijuana near Ararat with about 1000 plants four to five feet tall. Est value at harvest could reach about 260000. Suspect Robert Ray Fultz Jr was arrested on scene for feloniously cultivating a controlled substance and released on bond. Hearing set August 2 in Surry County District Court. In Wilkes County deputies seized 522 plants from a cornfield near Ronda with value 3000 to 4000. no arrests yet.

North Surry student Tim Hodges honored for lifesaving act
Tim Hodges a rising senior at North Surry High School received a Sunday reception cosponsored by the Beulah Raritan Club and the North Surry Key Club after he saved a girl in Michigan. The event included a letter from the child's mother and a telegram from Gov. James Holfhouser, with Hodges receiving plaques and a governor's proclamation. Hodges, an Eagle Scout, was also recommended for the Medal of Merit for dislodging a throat obstruction and performing mouth to mouth resuscitation until the girl breathed again. Speakers included Bud Cameron, Marlin Hicks, Greg Lawson, and Bruce Gray.

Mount Airy man shot during armed robbery at Mills Supermarket
Roy Roger Willard, 51, of Mount Airy, was in satisfactory condition after surgery for a gunshot wound to the abdomen. He said two Black men demanded his wallet at a phone booth near Mills Supermarket, and fled in his 1969 Chrysler later found burned near a Virginia market. The stolen car had been borrowed and Willard planned to buy it. FBI not yet called in.
