The Red Cross Bloodmobile will visit Dobson at Surry Community College Wednesday from 11:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Then it goes to Pilot Mountain's First United Methodist Church Thursday from 10:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Edwin Duncan Jr bond set at 800000 cash as federal agents say he planned to flee to Costa Rica to avoid embezzlement and fraud charges. Duncan charged with using monitoring equipment and listening to FBI and IRS conversations along with five counts of bank fraud and embezzlement. Other executives also charged with monitoring FBI conversations.
Vickie Smith won the Patrick County Tobacco Queen Pageant in Stuart beating eight contestants with Betty Ann Cox as first runner up and Janice Fain as second. Smith earns a $200 scholarship and will compete for the Tobacco Princess title in Richmond with Cox and Fain also receiving scholarships. Proceeds benefit local charity.
Mount Airy has been approved for the third year of federal funding for its downtown renewal plan. City Manager Victor Denton said HUD informed the city that 168000 dollars will cover year three, bringing total federal support to about 444000 dollars. The program, run through Community Development Revenue Sharing, aimed to boost housing for low income and elderly residents, but officials expect no further funds after year three.
