In Winston-Salem Mrs. V Pfaff of 982 Academy St attacked her sleeping husband with an axe and then tried to suicide by leaping into a well. He was seriously hurt but survived. Her mental state has been unstable for months and she faces commitment to a Morganton asylum.
Independence Virginia July 4 1910 Lewis Wingate son of Grayson County planter is found guilty of murdering his son Roy and is sentenced to eighteen years in the state penitentiary Wingate fainted as the verdict and sentence were read his family nearby His insanity defense is rejected and evidence shows Roy died after brutal mistreatment including confinement in an ice box and teeth extraction
The Winston Journal notes a Board of Health bulletin showing 2,011 smallpox cases across 48 counties last year with 8 deaths. White patients accounted for most cases, and the death rate was under one percent, aided by milder disease and doctors’ familiarity.
