Tobacco markets opened in Florida and Georgia last week with higher opening day prices. Mount Airy Market officials forecast opening day prices about 4.44 higher than last year and expect a season average near 105 to 110 cents per pound by season end. Through Aug 2 more than 15.78 million pounds designated for sale, down nearly 3 million from last year due to a 15 percent allotment cut and redesignation.

Two Mount Airy men Tony G Kirkman 29 and Ronnie L Hawks 27 have been charged with murder and armed robbery in the death of Clayton G Graviey 56 of Five Forks Virginia whose body was found in the trunk of his car in a peach orchard in Canada Graviey left Mount Airy March 24 en route to buy garden seeds and was killed by gunfire in North Carolina authorities say The defendants were previously tried in Surry County for larceny of a tractor trailer and lettuce cargo valued at 40000 from Cooke Trucking Co Inc of Mount Airy and sentenced to 3 7 years each The investigation was conducted by Virginia State Police Carroll and Surry counties SBI and is ongoing with warrants served at Central Prison Raleigh where the men are held

Roger Bill Cook, longtime assistant principal at Flat Rock Elementary, is chosen by Lowgap Elementary School’s special advisory committee to become principal. First Contestants Announced For Pageant In Mount Airy
Mount Airy Jaycees announce the first four contestants for Miss Mount Airy 1976 77 with a total 13 entrants, a record for the local pageant. Melanie Collins from UNC Greensboro sings backstage with piano training. Regina Chappell from Dobson studied at Surry Central and Surry Community College and attends UNC Greensboro. Cindy Harris from Thurmond plans UNC Greensboro attendance and will sing. Karen Denise Billings from Thurmond will perform drama as her talent. The two day pageant is August 6 7 at Mount Airy High School with Steve Ball of Elkin as choreographer.
