Mount Airy Man Dies After McDowell Prison Fire
A Mount Airy man Archie Lee Williams 23 died at Mission Memorial Hospital in Asheville after sustaining injuries in the June 30 prison fire at McDowell County Marion unit. The blaze killed four inmates then rose the death toll to eight as more inmates died in hospital. Investigators say inmates set foam mattress fires to protest radio seizures and may have intended an escape plan.

Gateway Seeks New Operator for Mount Airy Airport
Mount Airy Surry County Airport Authority plans to replace Gateway Aviation with Shamrock Aviation as fixed base operator by week’s end or August. Winston-Salem leaders Powell and Riley own Shamrock. Miss Elkin Valley Pageant Stakes 4000 in Scholarships
About 12 to 15 area girls are expected to enter the Miss Elkin Valley Pageant the largest turnout in pageant history. The August 14 event at Dixon Auditorium features a $1000 winner prize plus more than $1100 in prizes and additional scholarships worth over $1000. Theme is A Walk Down Sesame Street with costuming from the show. Performances include Miss Susan Hamlin reigning Miss Elkin Valley and Susie Proffitt Miss North Carolina from Rutherford County.
