Jesse Franklin Graves son of Porter Graves of this city died July 2 1931 at Martin Hospital after an appendicitis attack. He was 34 and a World War Navy veteran. Funeral at his home Friday 5 PM. interment Oakdale cemetery. Survived by his father two brothers William of Winston Salem Porter Jr and sister Mary Franklin Graves. Former prominent local businessman and educator.

The Mount Airy Canning Co. under manager J G Wood began operations this week in the J D Smith warehouse on Virginia Street. The plant will can blackberries beans and tomatoes with a capacity of 10000 cans daily. Current staff is about 25 workers expanding as crops come in. Bean growers receive 75 cents per bushel and berries 10 cents per gallon. tomato pricing not yet set. Wood brings extensive cannery experience from Rockford and earlier work in this city.

Veteran farmer James Mills dies on his Cloudville farm
James Mills a longtime Cloudville Virginia farmer and Civil War veteran died Thursday about 5 P M while plowing his tobacco. He would have turned eighty five on July 30. Survived by wife Fannie Leake two daughters Mrs Abe Smith and Mrs Wilse Mitchell three sons J F Mills J Will Mills and Walter Mills one sister Mrs Richard Joyce and one brother Frank Mills. Duncan Chalmers a 71 year old stone cutter in this city was found dead in his Sutton boarding house room Monday evening. He had been in ill health for months and likely died of heart trouble or paralysis. He moved here about 20 years ago from Scotland and had no local relatives. Funeral services were held Tuesday at Oakdale cemetery with the Odd Fellows conducting.
