Biggest Obstacle to Scaling Mt Everest
London Jan 20 Major R W G Hingston, medical officer on the Everest expedition, cites breathing as the main challenge. He notes climbers at 27 000 feet require seven to ten respirations per step and rest every 20 to 30 yards. At 28 000 feet Norton rose only 80 feet in an hour without oxygen. High altitude dulls the mind and memory, but Hingston says physiological hurdles can be overcome with favorable weather.
