A Mount Airy petition with about 65 residents calls for a town vote on establishing a liquor control ABC store. Spokesman says revenues of 150000 to 200000 yearly could fund libraries parks and police, noting Dobson store impact and prior narrow defeat.
Bill Breedlove and Frank Lowry announce a telephone campaign beginning February 2 to raise funds for the Surry Arts Council with a $12000 goal. Volunteers will contact residents, drive ends February 18, and council programs offer drama dance art and music opportunities to local students.
William A. Breedlove senior vice president of Planter's National Bank received the Mount Airy Chamber of Commerce Citizen of the Year award at the 16th Annual Meeting held at the Elk's Lodge. He also earned plaques for chairing the membership committee and serving as an outgoing director.
The Job Employment Training program in Doson helps unemployed adults gain motivation, job readiness, and basic education if needed. Participants attend eight weeks of classes, with six hours daily, five days a week, and may receive help from local industries to secure work.
Members of the Sorry Oi Dealers Association report adequate heating fuel stock if customers stop requesting unnecessary topping off deliveries. They urge customers to check tank levels before refilling and advocate conservation measures to prevent shortages and rising delivery costs.
Schools may run a full five days this week for the first time since mid December, with a Saturday session possible. Re openings after snow saw good attendance and few problems as temperatures rose, buses rerouted to reach students on hazardous roads, and North Carolina Virginia mountains remained snowy.

Steve Neal will hold a mobile office in Mount Airy beside the post office Monday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. An organizational meeting for a retired military association is at 7:30 p.m. today at Surry Community College. Anyone with over 20 years of military service including National Guard and reserves is welcome.
