Johnny Sasser, manager of Roses, announced on Monday the downtown Mount Airy store will stay. Earlier buzz suggested a move to Mayberry Mall to fill Grant’s former space, with rumors of a second Roses or a relocation.
Mount Airy Senior High acting II presents Picnic Friday and Saturday at 8 pm directed by Don Nance. The show earned Broadway acclaim and starred William Holden and Kim Novak in the film.
The Surry County Young Democrat Club backed changing election rules to let voters 18 by November participate in the March presidential preference primary. About 30 members backed the measure urging the State Board of Elections to amend regulations before the February 23 deadline for primary registration.
The Mount Airy News earned two North Carolina Press Association honors at the 51st Annual Newspaper Institute Awards Banquet. Publisher George Summerlin accepted a first place for sports coverage and a third place for editorials among non daily newspapers in Chapel Hill. Governor Jim was mentioned in the presentations.
North Carolina Secretary of Transportation Jacob F Alexander will visit Surry County on Saturday to inspect problem road areas and speak at a Republican fundraising dinner in Pilot Mountain. He will arrive at 430 PM to inspect NC 268, meet with officials, then visit Mount Airy to review Independence Bivds and Lebanon St areas, including the Lovills Creek bridge slated for replacement this year. Mount Airy receives a federal Bureau of Outdoor Recreation grant of 72362.56 dollars to develop the town’s first public park on a 16 acre Riverside Drive site. The town will match funds and begin development including a picnic area lighted courts fields restrooms and parking with work slated after final land purchases and contract specs.
Red Cross officials announce a two day blood drive at Veterans Park Thursday 11 am to 4 30 pm and Friday 10 am to 3 30 pm Sponsored by the Ladies Auxiliary of the VFW and Claude E Hooker Post volunteers will assist. Grace Vaughn notes most donors give 10 to 12 pints but only one is taken The drive aims to attract new donors and those with negative blood types hoping to collect 300 pints over the two days.
A Friday evening robbery at the Northwestern Bank branch on U.S. 601 left more than 3000 dollars in cash and checks missing. Detective Earl Seliers says the incident occurred as a night deposit was being made. The suspect, crouching between two cars about 40 feet away, demanded the bag and fled after the employee dropped it. The bag contained 1800 dollars in cash and 1200 dollars in checks. Mount Airy police and SBI are investigating and questioning several suspects. Six Surry County youths were later arrested for felonious possession of marijuana after a traffic stop led to discovery of two bags of marijuana and rolling papers. The six, including Donald Junior McMillion, 21, and five others aged 16 to 18, were charged and bond set at 750 dollars.
A meeting at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Surry Community College in Dobson will shape the county's Bicentennial plans. Officials scrapped the five day Dobson pageant, aiming for multiple local activities such as picnics and parades to involve broader participation. The plan modifies a prior $14,250 contract with Rogers Company and cancels the auditorium project, favoring local performances.
