Mount Airy Youths Enter Navy

Seven 17 year olds from Mount Airy and area have been accepted by the Navy per Chief Specialist J. E. Huffman. Recipients include Eugene Wheeler Hawks Gene Samuel Key Verlon Marshall Enas James George Wayne Alexander Frye Osler William Martin and Paul Henry Taylor. All sworn in as apprentice seamen except Taylor who qualified as hospital apprentice second class.

Capt Raymond McPeak Receives Air Medal

Capt Raymond McPeak of Mount Airy is awarded the Naval Air Medal for heroic action in the Caroline Islands. He attacked an enemy convoy of five ships with a Liberator bomber in the South Pacific. Also honored were Lieut E A Brown of Asheville for gallantry in France and Ens Jesse K McNinch of South Carolina posthumously for a fighter plane mission over Guam.

Nephew of Mrs. P A Tyndall Dies in Action

Pvt. William Floyd Taylor III, nephew of Mrs. P A Tyndall, was killed in action in Luxembourg Belgium on Christmas Day. He had just finished high school before entering the army and was reported by his father William Floyd Taylor II of Youngstown Ohio.

Health Workers Have Busy Year in Surry County

Surry County Health Department reports a year of extensive activity. The document to the County Commissioners details 632 communicable disease cases including 13 polio and 16 tuberculosis, 2062 venereal disease treatments, 1147 tuber culosis fluoroscope exams, 342 K rays, 417 pneumothorax operations, and 1466 skin tests.

Purple Heart Awarded to Cart Sergeant Kyle N. Smith

Cart Sergeant Kyle N. Smith aged 22 received the Purple Heart for wounds on Leyte Island in 1944. He sent the medal to his mother Mrs. W. M. Smith who recently received it. Smith reports rapid recovery in a Guadalcanal hospital and hopes to return to active duty soon.

The News Is Eight Hundred A Year In China

A letter from Pfe. John G. Llewellyn now with the Armed Forces in China enclosed four Chinese hundred dollar bills and asked The News be sent to his address for six months. He noted the $400 to cover six months is about right and stated the currency, though printed in this country, is genuine Chinese money. Llewellyn was former assistant clerk of the court at Dobson and is attached to the ordnance supply depot in China.

Trust Company Elects Officers in 1945 Meeting

The Surry County Loan and Trust Co held its annual meeting with 660 of 750 shares represented. J D Sargent was elected chair, John Sobotta joined the board, and resolutions honored the late T E Smith Jr. The bank reported its best year in service, receipts, and assets rising from 166000 to 3241192. Mr and Mrs J W Brinkley received a War Department telegram saying their son James Brinkley Jr with the US Infantry in Europe was slightly wounded December 23 He later wrote that he had a broken leg and is being treated in an English hospital He joined April 1943 trained at Camp Croft SC went overseas October 1944 He is married to Florence Nichols of Winston Salem NC

Sgt Ralph Draughn Returns Home From Australia on Leave

Sgt Ralph Draughn arrived from San Francisco on January 18 for a thirty day leave with his parents Mr and Mrs R R Draughn in Dobson Route 2. He had been overseas three years and serves as a mechanic with the U S Air Force on the rotation system. He reached San Francisco January 6 and was a visitor in Mount Airy Tuesday.

Sgt. Wesley Gates, son of Mr and Mrs John W Gates of Ararat Virginia, has been missing in action in Belgium since December 24. He is the brother of Mrs Weldon Inman of this city.

Carl McBride of Mount Airy has reached Welch Convalescent Hospital in Daytona Beach Florida the Army’s new conditioning center. He served 16 months in the European theatre before returning home and is joined by wife Gladys and children Lily and Betty. He enlisted in November 1942 at Camp Croft South Carolina.
