City Fathers meet in City Hall and approve turning all parking meter dimes into the March of Dimes drive in Surry County from now until January 31. Polio executive group discussed proceeds at a City Hall meeting. Mayor Carter supports dimes dropped in meters.
Rev Lonnie A Fleming longtime Calvary Baptist Church minister resigns citing fulfilled mission and helped build a new church appraised at 50000 dollars. He served five and a half years and became full time about four years ago amid a major building program.
A physician named Dr Jolly from Bikin announced plans to be in the vicinity to see patients. The message notes the local area around Pon Peta and aims to provide medical attention to residents.
The body of Private Isaac L Edwards 29 arrived at Moody Funeral Home from Atlanta with a military escort and lay in state until 2 p m He was born in Carroll County Virginia son of James A and Malinda Cagle Edwards He was killed in action in Germany March 24 1946 Survivors include his wife Mary Hawks two sons Oscar and Andrew Edwards a daughter Ollie Edwards his mother a brother Garfield Edwards and sister Mrs Joe McMillian of Mount Airy Route 6
A Dobson physician Dr Polger died last week at Duke Hospital leaving the community with the loss of its sole medical doctor. The community anticipates that Dr Tripes will be very helpful to the area.
In cooperation with the Mount Airy Merchants Association the Town Board recognizes Thursday afternoons as a holiday starting at 1 o'clock and will not check cars or meter violations. The period runs from January to September 1, 1949.
Dr Otis Oliver announced this week that he has resigned from the Mount Airy Baseball Club as president and will not be connected with the club this coming season. The Granite City baseball scene shows little hope for 1949 with a report citing $11 000 for the club and waning citizen interest. Oliver says running a baseball club is a near full time job.
German Caleb Jessup aged 66 of Westfield died at Mount Airy hospital after a stroke four days earlier. Survived by wife Ida, daughters Mrs Clyde Reeves and Elisabeth Jessup, five sons Rufus Jessup US Army Tennessee, John Jessup of Francisco, Thomas Wayne Jessup and Ceol Jessup at home, one grandchild. Funeral held 2 pm Tuesday at Asbury Presbyterian Church with Rev. Charlie Gimmons. Burial in family cemetery.
Dr Paul Folger 56 of Dobson died at 2 45 am Saturday at Duke Hospital He was born in Surry County Dec 31 1892 son of Dr Walter C Folger and Gaille V Freemans Folger He married Edina Lee Smith Aug 33 1923 He attended UNC class of 1922 served as a WWI sergeant Surviving wife three sons Myron Bernays and Roger Folger also Walter Myron Folger of High Point Sam Folger of Charlotte two sisters Mrs Sam Poole of Greensboro Mrs D D Rudle of Sanford Funeral 2 pm Sunday at Dodson Methodist Church with Rev Robert L Carter and Rev Wilson Nesbitt officiating He was a life long church member and former financial secretary.
James Hugh McNabb 37 of Mr Airy receives 10 to 12 years for shooting Hailey to death at a Mount Airy dance after an argument. Defense says self defense. Judge Hoyle Sink presided after lengthy trial arguments. Jury named multiple local residents. Other cases included an intoxicated driving charge with jail time and fines.
Last week the Grand Jury directed a review of records for W. D. Inman Justice of the Peace. The inquiry was filed with Clerk of Court Kermit Law along with ten witnesses.
Dr Clyde A Erwin State Superintendent urged urgent state aid for public school buildings due to war construction delays He addressed Kiwanis Lions and Exchange Clubs at Blue Ridge Hotel noting a 156000 need to bring schools up to standard He called for a salary schedule 2400 to 3000 and funds to help Mount Airy build a new high school with auditorium and other needs with current local funds and contractor estimates around 700000
Galax officers arrested Robert Eugene Blevins 22 of Galax route 3 and Gene Phipps Harmon of 301 Webster Street Galax at 4 30 a m Tuesday for drunk and disorderly conduct and carrying a concealed weapon. Officers found the men were driving without a license and sought an ownership record for the car.
In turn introduced De Erwin. Specis music was provided by Mr. and Mrs. James Bray, vocalists.
Elwood Chaney, 33, was released on a bond around $4,900 Wednesday morning in Dobson. His father Ed Chaney and Hub Mclride signed the bond as Chaney faces an assault with intent to kill charge after a shooting at his home. Chaney is recovering in hospital.
In Galax a burglary left 37 hams and 14 shoulders missing. Officers traced a car yielding salt in the back seat. Harmon admitted taking 14 hams and selling them to Jimmy Atwood atop Longap Mountain for $0. The men were released to the police department Tuesday.
Surry County Health Department expands maternal child health with a monthly mothers and babies clinic at Mount Airy office. First clinic January 26 runs 9 am to 3 30 pm focusing on infant care and new mother guidance. Collaboration with Bow men Gray School of Medicine and State Board of Health supports nurses and prenatal services.
The Grand Jury returned six true bills and two not true bills against Justice of the Peace Inman of Surry County. A warrant signed by Solicitor Ralph Scott states Inman failed to furnish the Clerk of Superior Court a list of names and offenses of all parties tried and disposed of by him. Bond set at $2,600. case open pending further investigation and a required report to the Clerk of Court.
Pilot Mountain Chief Sid C. Patton recovered a cache of liquor found near the town and returned it to the jail. Shortly after, brothers Aldeen and Jack Wilson were arrested for breaking and entering the town jail and attempting to load the liquor into a car.
John Taylor 50 longtime Northwestern North Carolina political figure and former Stokes County sheriff died after a stroke in a Walnut Cove bank and was pronounced dead in Winston-Salem. He had health issues in recent months and had declined to run for the North Carolina House after serving in 1967. He previously held offices as register of deeds and sheriff for many years.
