Mount Airy commissioners rejected a request from a church group to display religious bicentennial signs in public rights of way. A Thursday meeting discussed a letter to Rev Gene Carnell urging adherence to state policy on public information signs and suggesting cooperation with the county Bicentennial Commission or private property permission for display.
Temperatures dipped to three degrees above zero at Orchard St water plant, the coldest in years. The Young Democrats Club of Surry County meets Thursday at 7:30 pm in the courthouse in Dobson with Kep David Diamont and Priscilla Hartle as guests. A continuing education course at Surry Community College will cover home storage, nutrition, weaving, wild foods, gardening, and saving on fuel. taught by Mrs Willine Merritt with registration available by calling 386-121, extension 34.
Arlington town officials led by Mayor W Maynard Beamer press the Department of Transportation to improve the U S 52 intersections at Arlington Street and Newscome Street Newscome Industrial Park Drive area traffic growth from planned Spencer Inc expansion and a future shopping center has raised safety concerns Officials report worsening conditions and several fatal accidents with calls for traffic lights and potential turn lanes A resident questioned state officials about plans and urged stronger local pressure to spur action
The planning board meeting appointed John Banner as chairman for one year and adopted a policy routing annexation requests to the board for full review before town board action. Mayor Beamer praised Woltz’s service and announced Harry Vaughn will fill Woltz’s term to August 1, 1976. The first annexation request to be reviewed concerns property near Carolina Tire Co from Mr. and Mrs. Clay Hauser.
Sen. Jesse Helms of North Carolina assailed detente as a one sided policy during a Mount Airy Chamber of Commerce meeting. He criticized federal deficit spending and warned that detente would fail if the USSR cheats, urging a hard line stance and citing his Pasquotank County gold mine as a personal aside.
Two shooting victims remained hospitalized last Thursday in Surry County. A 20-year-old Dobson man, Walter Gray Venable, was in critical condition at Baptist Hospital after a self-inflicted chest wound. A 17-year-old State Road youth, Joseph Daniel Richardson, was in satisfactory condition after accidentally firing a .22 pistol at a parking lot near Surry Central High School.
A 20 year old Galax Virginia man was acquitted in Surry County Circuit Court of murder in the fatal Oct 23 stabbing outside the Ebony Club in Mount Airy to Zigler. The charge was reduced to voluntary manslaughter in district court. The jury deliberated briefly before finding him not guilty.
Stan Rogge vice president of Quality Mills received Mount Airy Citizen of the Year at the Chamber Fifteenth Annual Meeting at Elk's Lodge. Beamer praised Rogge for leading the Education Committee and launching programs including Junior Achievement expansion and Business Education Day. Rogge also chairs Reeves Center revitalization efforts and serves on multiple boards. Other awards and upcoming officers were announced, including Loftis as president and Wright as president elect.
Town of Mount Airy commissioners approved bids for three new vehicles including a police car with trade-in, a 1976 Cornet from Burton Dodge at 3915 minus 910, a 1976 International dump truck from Truck and Tractor at 8320, and a 1976 Dodge Monaco from Burton Dodge at 4275.
