Goodwill Industries directors vote to operate a retail store and repair shop in Mount Airy in the former Fuller Furniture Co. building. Executive Director Mulcahy and Carl Whitney planned the move after talks with community leaders. initial staff includes about six workers with up to two dozen in the repair shop. Donations from locals will fuel operations as the group plans pickup of goods and eventual expansion.

New Officer Fills Vacancy at Mount Airy Police
Patrolman Donnie York, 22, began duties Sunday night to fill one of two vacancies on the Mount Airy Police Department. A Mount Airy native and Mount Airy High School graduate, he just returned from 3.5 years in the U S Air Force, where he served in Korea and earned sergeant rank. He is the son of Mrs. Cleo Williams and James York. Police Chief BE V Marion is interviewing other applicants to fill the remaining vacancy.

Four-Way Volunteer Firefighters Fight Two House Blazes
Four-Way volunteer firemen responded to a brush fire at Roger Dolly residence on Blue Hollow Road Slate Mountain about 11 a.m. Saturday and returned to quarters an hour later. On Sunday at 12 30 p.m. they fought a mobile home fire at Ted Taylor’s trailer near Simmons Monument Company NC 103, with significant damage to the kitchen and den.

Thieves Sought in Narcotics Robbery at Local Drugstore
Mount Airy officers and federal narcotics agents pursue suspects after a 4:30 a.m. break in at Hollingsworth Drug Company in Mayberry Mall. The thieves opened a locked narcotics drawer taking pills and concentrated narcotics along with hundreds of checks and cash. No arrests reported by presstime.
