Mount Airy Community Theatre and Arts Council will be highlighted in a statewide educational TV program on Saturday Feb 7. The hour long telecast on UNC channels 26 and 4 includes a 15 minute Mount Airy segment after years of local filming.
Gary Lee Collins, 22, faces speeding, reckless driving and evading officers charges after a Saturday night pursuit across Wards Gap Road and into Mount Airy. His father Maynard Lee Collins, 79 E Linville Road, is charged with assault by pointing a gun as deputies pursued a shaken suspect and a youth tangled with officers. Bond set at 500 each.
In Dobson 200 tobacco growers filled forms showing willingness to pledge 3 million pounds of leaf and buy about 63000 dollars of co op stock at 50 dollars per acre. Eddie Brown of Pinnacle chosen as temporary chair to lead a countywide canvass and form a permanent steering committee.
Roger Puckett a 36 year old Mount Airy real estate broker received the Mount Airy Jaycees Distinguished Service Award at the annual banquet. He has served as Jaycees president and held every office during 11 years in the organization. He operates Puckett Rental and Rearly on Franklin St. and is a licensed broker.
Susan King, back in Mount Airy after a New York stint, was chosen to lead the Mount Airy Community Theatre at the third annual meeting held Friday evening at Ray's Starlite. The event drew over 60 attendees, with Robert Merritt as vice president Cindy Joyce secretary and Bill Chapman treasurer. Mrs King succeeds Ed Cox who credited 1975 as the best year amid a $11,000 budget funded by more than 7 000 in attendance and 4 000 in grants. Don Nance highlighted rising participation and audiences from 800 in year one to over 3 000 last year, noting the group’s growing community support. Two recent Mount Airy break-ins reported to the police involve 317 Woodruff St where six guns valued at 1300 dollars were taken. The thief entered by breaking the back door glass, unlocked the door, and removed a secured closet collection including Remington shotguns rifles and a Winchester. Another theft at 405 Arlington St yielded cameras jewelry rings and watches after a carport door glass was broken. both cases remain under investigation.
The Greater Mount Airy United Fund invites contributors and volunteers to its annual meeting Monday Jan 19 at Reeves Community Center. John Stevens says new directors will be elected to fill two vacancies and three expiring terms. A full campaign report and status update will be given along with open floor for suggestions. Tommy Williams Jr urges community attendance. The fund raised over 96000 dollars, surpassing the 94600 goal and achieving a high per capita contributing rate. Special recognition will be given to outstanding contributors. disbursement plans include quarterly checks with the first issued Dec 3.
Sen Helms is slated to address the Chamber of Commerce banquet at 7 p.m. Friday at the Elks Lodge. The event will award community honors, install officers, and present the annual report. Helms, a Monroe native and Reagan supporter, has recent pay gains for his GOP efforts.
