Plc Robert Payne formerly of Mount Airy has arrived at Welch Convalescent Hospital in Daytona Beach Florida. The Army reconditioning program aids his speedy recovery after 18 months in the European theater. He previously worked for Mount Airy Knitting Co. The son of Ella Payne he joined the service in July 1942.
Recuperating in an English hospital Private Rushia V. Leon ard son of Mr and Mrs W C Leonard Mount Airy Route 5 has been awarded the Oak Leaf Cluster to the Purple Heart after being wounded for the second time in action in France.
First Lieut Gene C Riddle formerly of Mount Airy reported for duty at Gardner Field California a basic pilot school in the AAP Western Flying Training Command Lieut Riddle recently returned from nine months service in the Mediterranean theatre as pilot of a B 24 Liberator bomber Lieut and Mrs Riddle are now residing in Taft California
Marine Corps Private First Class Alvin L. Blue is promoted to corporal at Cherry Point North Carolina. He enlisted March 21, 1944 and serves in the Ninth Marine Aircraft Wing administrative section during combat training at the air station.
Pvt. Roger Moore of Mount Airy was among three cooks in the 5th Army who barely escaped a German shelling. They hid in a cellar and spent the night, then stepped out at dawn to cook breakfast as the house collapsed burying their blankets and gear.
Frank L. Key of 178 Durham Street is awarded the Good Conduct Medal and the Purple Heart for wounds in Italy. He joined the Army November 11, 1943, trained at Camp Wheeler and Fort Meade, landed in Italy in May 1943, and has served there since. His wife is Minnie Lou Leach. they have one daughter, Barbara, and are living with Mrs. Leach’s father, J. R. Leach, during the duration.
Sgt. Thomas G. Macon 22 son of Mr and Mrs Arthur B Macon Mount Airy has reached Italy to join the 15th AAF Liberator Bombardment Squadron after six months with an 8th AAF Fortress Group in England He trained as a gunner and earned wings in Florida December 1943 prior to enlistment he studied at North Carolina State College Raleigh and worked as a bookkeeper for First National Bank in Mount Airy.
Marine Sergeant Calvin Graves Jr son of Mrs Calvin Graves of Mount Airy has been promoted from corporal to sergeant at the Marine Air Station Cherry Point He is on duty in the station law office Graves was an attorney in Winston Salem before joining the Marine Corps on January 7 1944
Private Cephus P. Payne, 28, receives the Combat Infantryman’s Badge for meritorious combat on the front lines in France and Germany. He is the brother of Rupert N. Payne of Mount Airy and has served two years.
Cpl. William A. Short, recently stationed at Fort Knox Kentucky, is ending a leave with relatives on Route.
The Dobson criminal term adjourned due to witness issues. Cecil Ayers pleaded guilty to manslaughter, later changed to forcible trespass with three years probation and welfare reporting. Five Meredith family members were released from murder charges for lack of sufficient evidence. The Meredith home fire remains tied to the case, with Glenn Miller’s remains found. A civil term is planned next week.
Seaman second class Robert L. Hall son of the late Mr and Mrs James W Hall of Claudeville Virginia has informed his sister Mrs Elwood Eads that he landed safely in New Guinea He entered the Navy June 2 1944 and trained at Camp Peary Virginia
Pvt. Bennett G. King of Mount Airy has graduated from the track mechanic course at the ordnance school Aberdeen Proving Grounds Maryland. He is the son of Mrs. Linda King of Willow Street and is married to Ila Beamer. He will return to Fort Jackson South Carolina.
Pvt. Roland M. Nichols returns to Welch Hospital Daytona Beach Florida after a 15 day furlough with his sister Mrs Bill Scott and visits with relatives on route 4. He served in the infantry in Italy was wounded and has been hospitalized since April 1944.
Pvt Johnnie B Martin of route 5 Mount Airy and son of Mrs Mary Martin in the 81st Wildcat Infantry Division is awarded the Combat Infantryman Badge for exemplary conduct and skill in action as the division invaded the southern Palau Islands 6500 miles east of the Philippines.
Mount Airy native Second Lt Allen H Gwyn of the 351st Bombardment Group in England received an Oak Leaf Cluster to the Air Medal for meritorious achievement on bombing missions over Europe. A 24 year old veteran of twelve raids, he is a Mount Airy High School 1938 and Oak Ridge Military Academy 1940 alumnus. His parents Mr and Mrs Joseph H Gwyn plus siblings serve in the armed forces.
Pvt Henry A Badgett 19 earned the Purple Heart for shrapnel wounds in both legs during action on December 4. He left for overseas October 1 1944 with a unit in the 100th division and was treated in an English hospital while on crutches. His medal was sent to his mother Mrs Roy C Mitchell.
Mr and Mrs W B Partridge received a War Department telegram that their son Elbert Partridge has been slightly wounded in action in Belgium on December 19. He serves with the 559th field artillery.
Pfc. Guy Leonard writes to his mother Mrs Ola Leonard Route 5 Mount Airy that he is attached to a famous fighting unit in Germany. He says mail is arriving more reliably and notes he landed with the invasion forces at Normandy and has fought through France Belgium and Holland into Germany.
Col Vance Haynes spent Sunday and Monday in the city visiting his parents Mr and Mrs C H Haynes and relatives. He traveled in a Mitchell bomber from Long Island to Winston Salem. Haynes is stationed at Mitchell Field Long Island as commanding officer in charge of the largest air field in the United States.
Mrs J Stevenson Brown of Charlotte spent the past weekend with Mrs Oscar Yokley in this city.
Clifton W. Atwood, 35, son of Mr. and Mrs. Will Atwood of Mount Airy Route 1, was killed in action in France on December 1. He entered the army in June 1942, trained at Camp Blanding Camp Forrest and Camp Phillips, went to England last April with an infantry unit, and was recently awarded the Bronze Star for evacuating wounded comrades. Surviving are his father and stepmother, a sister Mrs Lester Midgett of Sneads Ferry, and a half sister Avalone Atwood of Mount Airy Route 1.
The annual stockholders meeting reported a record year with assets up about 1.5 million to more than 5.5 million. Two new directors E L Brannock and J Graham Harrison joined the board, which includes T G Fawcett, Geo O Graves, Dr Moir S Martin, Fred Folger, N W Dobbins, Henry Folger, J Graham Harrison, E L Brannock and D C Rector. All officers were re elected for 1945: T G Pawcett president, Geo O Graves Fred Folger Henry Folger vice presidents, D C Rector cashier, E L Brannock and G Thos Fawcett assistant cashiers.
Sergeant George W. Martin of Mount Airy and 25 other Third Marine Division men joined an assault signal unit aiding carrier planes in the Leyte invasion. He narrowly escaped two Jap assaults, was cut off from supplies for two days, and drank water from shell holes while wounded comrades lay nearby.
Lieut. Col Howell J. Hatcher mails from Holland to sister Pearl describing daily duties, moving about, plans to fly to London via Paris, and handling about 1,000 prisoners daily while serving with family ties back in Morganton and near the city.
Mrs. Hale Yokley departed Thursday afternoon to spend time with her husband Lieutenant J. G. Hale Yokley in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania.
In a public ceremony heavily attended by Masons and friends Dr Otis Oliver was installed as Master of the Masonic lodge for 1945 succeeding A Clark Lackey. Grand Master Julius C Hobbs installed the new Master and officers with remarks from Rev C E Otey and A B Macon.
Poy Hiatt of Ararat Virginia has been hired as manager of Sparger Orchards five miles east of Mount Airy. The orchard, now Poole's Orchard, was bought a year ago by Mr Poole of Moore County. Hiatt, with 13 years at Bald Mountain Orchards, will relocate to the property in a few weeks and has already assumed control.
Pfc. Edward Belton Jr of Spartanburg D C returns to the United States after eighteen months overseas with the Army Air Force. He has been a patient in hospitals in France and England, now at General Hospital Brentwood New York and expects transfer to a Greensboro hospital and later a furlough. He is brother of Mrs. Bill Childress of this city.
Mrs L B Dunbar spent the past weekend with her daughter Mrs Loten Greenwood in Geax Virginia.
Allied forces under Gen. Douglas MacArthur invaded Luzon from Lingayen Gulf with an 800-ship armada, establishing a 15 mile beachhead. No American deaths reported in the first wave as engineers began airstrip construction and coastal towns such as San Fabian were seized. MacArthur declared strategic surprise and a decisive battle for the liberation of the Philippines had begun.
Will Stewart, a Negro truck driver for G O C Hauser, was killed when his truck side swiped a Hauser vehicle on Bannertown road and crashed into a light pole at high speed. The other driver and truck suffered no serious injuries. Stewart, married with three children, is survived by his wife.
Mrs. Carroll Hill reports Mount Airy's 1944 records show 320 births with 18 stillbirths and 143 deaths, indicating births more than double the deaths last year.
