Reeves YMCA director Terry Gwinn reports the sheltering crisis has eased with about 9,500 in new gifts, 1,700 members, and rising volunteer involvement on Renfro Street. Local merchants industries and Jaycees fueled donations and fundraisers as plans target 2 500 members in April renewal efforts.
Albert H. Watson of Ararat filed Wednesday as a Republican candidate for a seat on the county board of commissioners Central District. He challenged incumbent Boyd Tilley for a second term, the race’s only GOP contest. Watson, 52, a Mount Airy area businessman and former farmer, is a WWI Army veteran and Little Mountain Baptist Church trustee. He cites his rural and urban representation focus and vows to distribute justice and equality across the county.

Final rites for Sallie Waller Leake 92 widow of Dr James Jackson Leake will be held today at 4 pm at First Presbyterian Church in Mount Airy. She died Wednesday at Northern Surry Hospital. Pallbearers include Carl Peters Hale Yakley Jake Roundtree Hugh Merritt Charles Sykes Tom Jones Marion Burke and A B Carter.
