Red Cross campaign begins here on Tuesday March 2 with volunteers from Mount Airy and Surry County organized into committees and assigned roles for fundraising and community outreach.
Walkerton resident Garnet Golden, 20, arrested by federal agents for possession of sugar intended for illicit distilling. The incident began on January 20 on Main Street when a witness followed Golden to a parking lot and heard the remark I am going to make a run of rye. Bond set at 300 dollars. Trial to be in Winston-Salem Federal Court.
The body of Capt. William Gates Duncan of Ararat Virginia rests at Moody's Funeral Home ahead of a Sunday 2:30 PM Moravian Church service. Interment follows at Oakdale Cemetery. Duncan served in the Engineer Corps later rising to Captain and commanded supply troops in France in World War II. He died April 16 1945 at age 44 and is survived by his parents three sisters and wife Maybelle Smith Duncan.
Prominent Mount Airy physician and civic leader Dr Tilman Carlisle Britt aged 53 died last Friday in Sanford Florida after a heart attack. He was a Rotson County native and son of Mr and Mrs Nathan Britt. He practiced in Mount Airy after a career in public health roles in North Carolina and Harvard study. Funeral held at Trinity Episcopal Church with burial at Oakdale Cemetery. Surviving are his widow a son and a daughter and several brothers and sisters.
William Ryan world champion checker player from New York City will give an exhibition in this city at Renfro Recreation hall on Willow Street tonight. He will play 6 to 10 opponents blindfolded and also challenge all contestants at the same time. The event is promoted by local checker players and open to the public.
Mrs. Sam Levering will speak to the Kiwanis Club on Friday evening at the Blue Ridge Hotel. Her topic is World Government and the meeting starts at 6 30.
Mount Airy National Guard head James K Bray announced the unit failed federal inspection and will hold a meeting at City Hall Saturday at 3 p m. Another session is planned Wednesday night March 3 at City Hall with movies and refreshments. A prize essay contest offers 10 for first and 5 for second on How A National Guard Unit Will Benefit Mount Airy.
Chief Monty W. Boone announced that residents cited for traffic violations are not appearing at the clerk’s office in City Hall. He warned that warrants will be issued and prosecutions pursued for those failing to answer, as traffic problems grow in Mount Airy.
Mrs Ben Taylor was admitted to Elkin Hospital where she will receive medical treatments.
Mount Airy area launches World Government petition drive led by Joe Fowler with United World Federalists. John Thomason of North Carolina directs local planning. ministers endorse the cause as radio WPAQ promotes programs answering questions about World Government.
Miss Leah Christine Collins daughter of Mr and Mrs W A Collins of Elkin North Carolina has been chosen Miss Martin Memorial Hospital School of Nursing for 1948 She is a Mountain Park High School alumna and former class president and basketball captain She will speak at the North Carolina State Nurses Association district meeting in Winston Salem on March 11 about the advantages of nursing as a career and the district winner advances to Raleigh on April 20 with other district winners
A meeting Friday at 8 p m at the Blue Ridge Hotel will discuss forming a Mount Airy Community Concert Association. Richard Suter of the Community Concert Service in New York will describe the organized audience plan to attract famous concert stars on a non profit basis with no local financial risk. Civic leaders club representatives and the public are invited.
The Virginia Carolina Auction Exchange begins construction on a new 100 by 100 foot building across the Ararat River on Hamburg Road. Officials expect move in within 30 to 60 days, with a 2,000 head cattle capacity and a Wednesday cafe for farmers. The market has grown since 1935 with cattle prices high and Wednesday known as Cattle Day.
A B Macon the Mount Airy druggist was elected president by secret ballot to lead the Mount Airy Merchants Association, succeeding M A Thomas. Wayne Boyles, H P Mills, and Miss Lacy Jane Poore named officers as directors were elected at the annual banquet with about 100 members present. The event followed last Thursday night's directors’ meeting. The ACB of North Carolina meeting in Hickory on March 10 also discussed other business matters.
Belk's Department Store displays a Better Health poster and materials for a voluntary health agency. It awards $100 to any Graniteer whose name is chosen for a new comic strip character. Merchants statewide offer $1,16781 in prizes. contest closes Sunday February 2 at midnight.
Cleveland NC preacher Rev. Thomas Ruff will be guest speaker at Flat Rock Presbyterian Church on Sunday evening February 289 at 7 00 pm.
Dr. B O Choate of Sparta wins a State Supreme Court reversal granting a new trial. Evidence of similar offenses was improperly admitted to suggest abortion practices and bias jurors. He was previously convicted in Surry County for an abortion causing Mrs. Annie Mae Anderson’s death in 1946 Elkin hotel.
Miss Mary Waller died in Richmond Virginia on Wednesday morning. Her sister Mrs J J Leake of this city had stayed with her. A niece Mrs Ralph Sykes and Dr Sykes traveled to Richmond for the funeral held Thursday. Survivors include four sisters Mrs J J Leake Mrs Nancy of Washington DC Lois and Margaret Waller of Bassett Virginia.
Merlin Robertson of White Plains says he will seek the Register of Deeds post after a rumor linked him to the race. Mrs Bertha Shinault of Dobson plans to seek re election though reports suggested she might not run.
