County secretary Hal B B Collins reports 1949 tobacco allotments total 14 7464 acres up 738 acres from 1948 due to a 56 percent state wide increase. Last year 14 008 acres were allotted and penalties apply for exceeding prescribed limits. McBride Obtains Habeas Corpus in Dobson Court

National Guard Here Now Has 43 Enlisted Men
Commander James R. Bray announced the Head quarters Company of the local National Guard now has three officers and 43 enlisted men with 36 vacancies. Recruitment continues until the state quota is met and employers are urged to support joining. Members attend Monday meetings and two weeks of summer camp at Camp Jackson South Carolina. Pay ranges from 2.50 to 95.50 per year with full pay during summer camp. Veterans Park construction is expected to start June 1.

Funeral plans for 3 local soldiers
Bodies of three Mount Airy soldiers are being returned for burial in home cemeteries. Pfc. Gilbert M Stevens arrives Friday from Atlanta with military escort and will lie in state at Moody Funeral Home until 2 p.m. Saturday before his burial at his mother's Durham Street home. Stevens, born November 17 1919 in Surry County, was accidentally shot in Italy May 8 1944 at age 24. Funeral services are set for Sunday at 2 p.m. Haymore Memorial Baptist Church, with Rev. C E B Otey and Rev. Wesley Cook officiating. He will have a full military funeral.

Heath Jenkins Dies In Washington D C
Heath Lawrence Jenkins son of Mrs J David Jenkins and the late Mr Jenkins and brother of Mrs Roland T Booth of Buffalo died suddenly in Washington D C on February 9 19xx. He had been ill and in Walter Reed Hospital for two years. He attended Mount Airy schools and Staunton Military Academy and served in World War I. He was buried February 14 at Arlington National Cemetery. He was not married. His mother and Roland Booth attended the funeral. Mrs Booth could not travel due to illness.

On Thursday February 17 at 10 30 a m Webster Jones farm on Piper Gap Highway hosted a ditch blasting demonstration by Palmer Veterans Trainee of Franklin with seventy two members. The five hundred foot ditch was blasted while about thirty farmers observed the project and demonstration.

Rev R J Payne pastor of Friends Church of this city suffered a heart attack in Greensboro Friday while at Guilford College. He was taken by ambulance to Mount Airy and is a patient at Martin Memorial Hospital where his condition was described as critical but believed improving.

Midkiff Hardware Store Expands With New Two Story Addition
Workmen began pouring the concrete foundation for a large two story addition to John H. Midkiff's hardware store at Main and Oak Streets.
